Omar Pene
Omar Pene (* 1956 in Dakar , Senegal ) is a Senegalese Mbalax singer and composer.
Career
In Senegal, Pene is a legend and is even seen as one of the most important singers on the black continent. In 1974 he founded the band Super Diamono de Dakar . His music is characterized by his melancholy, powerful timbre. The lyrics of the music are often socially critical. Pene influenced West African pop music at least as much as Youssou N'Dour . In Europe, however, he failed to make a breakthrough.
Pene was nominated for "Best African Musician" by the American television station CFTV in 1998 and won the "Golden Kora" in Johannesburg in the same year .
