Ymer Pampuri (born April 30, 1944 in Tirana , † January 18, 2017 in Tirana) was an Albanian weightlifter and participant in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . He was the last winner of the world press championships. This discipline has not been practiced since then, which is why his 1972 Olympic record is still in force.

Ymer Pampuri already had performances as an acrobat in the circus of his hometown Tirana at the age of seven . Weightlifting got serious after modern training methods from China were introduced in Albania in the mid-1960s .

He made his first international appearance at the European Championships in 1972 in Constanța , Romania . He won silver in pushing, and like the winner, he reached 125 kilograms. In the same year he took part in the Olympic Games in Munich - Albania sent a delegation to the Olympic Games for the first time. Pampuri broke in Munich - like Dito Schanidze from the Soviet Union and the Bulgarian Norair Nurikjan - with 127.5 kilograms the Olympic record in pushing, which was rated as a world championship in this discipline. However, since the triathlon as it is carried out at the Olympic Games was not practiced in Albania, Pampuri fell back to 9th place after the pushing and tearing.

Later he worked again as a clown in Tirana. In 1981 he stopped playing. He died in January 2017 and was still considered a sports hero in his homeland who broke many national records.

In 2002 a postage stamp was issued in Albania with his portrait and a text referring to the Olympic record. Albania has given Pampuri several awards. But he also had to be disciplined by the authorities because he had given interviews to foreign media in Munich.
