Abu Hafs Umar

Abu Hafs Umar (* 1090 ; † 1175 in Salé ) was an important leader of the Almohads .

Abu Hafs Umar was actually called Fuskat u Mzab and was the leader of the Hintata, a tribe of the Masmuda , south of Marrakech . He was an early follower of Ibn Tumart and his teachings and took him on after his retreat from Marrakech. At the instigation of Ibn Tumart, he took the name Abu Hafs Umar (name of a companion of the Prophet Mohammed ) to emphasize the prophetic mission of the movement and Ibn Tumart. After Abd al-Mumin, he was the highest-ranking Almohad leader and always loyal to the memory of Ibn Tumart.

After the death of Abd al-Mumin, his son Muhammad initially came to power, but was deposed in 1163 due to incompetence. Abu Hafs Umar also supported the successor Abu Yaqub Yusuf I in the following years. He led the troops on the campaigns until the end of his life. Abu Hafs Umar died in Sale in 1175.

His sons achieved important positions in the Almohad Empire. Abu Muhammad Abdalwahid became governor in Tunis . His son Abu Zakariyya Yahya I founded the Hafsiden dynasty in Ifrīqiya in 1229 and gained independence from the Almohads .
