Yusuf Garaad Omar

Yusuf Garaad Omar ( Somali : Yuusuf Garaad Cumar , Arabic يوسف جراد عمر; Born June 26, 1960 in Hamar Jajab , Banaadir , Somalia ) is a Somali journalist , diplomat and politician who was Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City between 2016 and 2017 and has been Secretary of State since March 21, 2017.

Life

After attending school, Omar began studying French at the National University of Somalia in Mogadishu , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA French). From 1983 to 1990 he was a radio presenter and news editor at the radio station Radio Mogadishu, which is part of the State Broadcasting Corporation . At the same time, he was involved as a staff member for the International Red Cross between 1987 and 1990 and was a freelance reporter for the BBC from 1991 to 1992 at the beginning of the Somali civil war . He then became an employee of the BBC in 1992 and was most recently head of its Somalia program from 1999 to 2012 and, in addition, in 2002 for some time acting head of the Africa program. During this time he also worked in 1997 as a lecturer in journalism and news production at the BBC College of Journalism .

Omar, who in this period between 2004 and 2005 and the global master program of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University had visited in 2013 adviser of was Rift Valley Institute and adviser to the Interior Ministry. He then took over 2014-2015 Senior Advisor to the President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for strategic communications and was in 2015 director of media and communications company Horn Media & Communications Ltd .

In 2016 Omar was appointed Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City and presented his letter of accreditation to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on November 11, 2016 .

After Hassan Ali Khaire had been confirmed by the Federal Parliament on March 1, 2017 and sworn in as Prime Minister , Khaire named his cabinet on March 21, 2017, which included Omar as Foreign Minister, Abdirashid Abdullahi Mohamed as Defense Minister, Abdi Farah Said as Interior Minister and Abdirahman Duale Bayle as Secretary of the Treasury. After the federal parliament had confirmed the cabinet with 224 votes to 15, the ministers were also sworn in. He replaced Abdisalan Hadliye Omar as foreign minister .
