Aion: Tower of Eternity (commonly referred to as Aion) (Korean: 아이온) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in development by NCsoft that combines PvP and PvE in a fantasy setting.

History

In May 2006, NCsoft announced the development of Aion and that the game would be featured at E³ 2006.[1] NcSoft has confirmed on October 31, 2007 the Korean closed beta will start. [2] According to the European Community Coordinator the game will be making an appearance at the Leipziger Messe Game Convention August 23-26, 2007 Germany.[3][4] It has been confirmed that NCsoft will not be at the Tokyo Game Convention in 2007.[5]

Story

In the beginning the Balaur roamed the world of Atreia. These dragon like beings were eventually expelled by the Daeva, the God like beings created by the central God Aion. Later the Elyos and Asmodians, two warring factions along with the return of the Balaur eventually destroyed the link between the two halves of the world: The Tower of Eternity. The world now has the appearance of an “eaten apple” with the equator completely gone. Now the three factions fight for the dominance over all of Atreia.

Two Unique Factions

Factions

Two playable factions exist; the Elyos and the Asmodians. However, PlayNC has not yet revealed much information about the Asmodians. A third faction, the Balaur, will be server-controlled.

The Elyos are characters who live in the upper half of Aion, a light and vibrant place, while the Asmodians live in the lower half, the darker side of Aion. The developers explicitly mentioned that the character factions are more complex then simply one side being good while the other side evil.

The Balaur are NPCs and cannot be chosen at the character creation screen. They have artificial free will, and are designed to be unpredictable when they appear, for example, they may side with you during a skirmish with the opposing faction, but afterward they may decide to turn on you. They are described as Draconic-like beings (which is also suggested by their name, as "Balaur" is the Romanian term for Dragon).

Classes

There are eight classes currently in development. [6][7] Each faction will have a slight variation in class skills once they reach the first promotion at level 10. Note: According to the NCsoft these class names are not official and are subject to change in the full release.

Classic Melee Class

School of Warriors

Fighter

Fighters are flexible in their choice of weaponry. They're able to wield many kinds of close-combat weapons depending on the situation. Their combat style is comparatively easy to learn. This isn't to say that it is an easy class to master. With some flair they can outshine even the fanciest damage-dealing classes.

Classic Tank Class

Knight

It's unfortunate that in most MMO games the tank is conceptually attractive but not so fun to actually play. The classes in Aion are classic in some ways, but they all have their quirks that make them stand out from the archetype. With the Knight, players will see different shades of the class as it absorbs more and more damage. It's truly a different sort of tank melee class.

Classic Ranger Class

School of Scouts

Ranger

Ranger is a utility class with many tricks up its sleeve, such as laying traps and sniping from afar. It's a well-rounded class with melee and ranged skills as well as an ability to heal itself. Careful assessment of the situation is needed for a ranger to shine, for its many abilities can as easily get in the way for an unskilled player.

File:Assassin.JPG
Classic Stealth Class

Assassin

We can more or less sum up the assassin class with the words: watch your back! Big damage within a short span of time - that's what the assassin is all about. However, to get that proper use out of an assassin, swift positioning is extremely important.

File:Wizard Class.JPG
Classic magic class

School of Mages

Wizard

A wizard is a powerful magic class with deadly nuking skills, but also extremely fragile up close. A wizard might prefer to be in a party for survivability but with some care it could also be a fast solo class.

File:Elementalist.JPG
Summon the elements

Elementalist

An elementalist is not your ordinary summoner. As the name suggests, their tool of trade are the elementals that they manipulate at will. Get intimate enough with the elementals and you might very well become one.

File:Priest.JPG
Classic healing class

School of Clerics

Priest

Priests are, of course, the masters of recovery. They posses many healing skills to aid their kin, but that's not all. With a solid set of skill combinations and a number of melee skills they may surprise you in the right situation.

File:Chanter.JPG
A bard type class

Chanter

As a cleric, chanters can also heal to a certain extent, but their specialty is in mysterious chants that boost the morale of nearby players. They're also known for effective melee skill combinations and all-around usefulness. It should be an attractive class for those that like to do it all.

There are more classes to be announced. The classes listed above are for the Elyos. The Asmodians, and the Balaur classes will be announced at a later date.

Flight will have uses beyond just transportation

Features

The game is constantly taking in input from its community on what they want. This open discussion between developers and the gaming community is highly rewarding as the game continues to develop and innovate beyond expectations.

Flight

A distinctive feature that this game will have is the concept of flying. This will be a limited [active skill], during which the character will be able to perform various exclusive skills against ground and air players. It will also be used to find higher elevation areas or materials that can not be accessible through walking. Initially when you receive the power of the Davea at level 10 you'll receive a flight indicator with a 1 minute timer. Later the game will come out with items to upgrade your flight time.

Game Engine

In addition, the game uses the first generation Cryteks CryENGINE. This same engine was used in the development of the first person shooter FarCry.

Visuals

The game will break new ground with its amazing visuals based on its use of the CryENGINE and highly talented art designers whose inspiration came from multiple themes. Aion has a distinctly unique setting which can be described as “dream like”.

Character Customization

The character customization system will be highly exhaustive; allowing the player to make their character looks exactly the way they want.

Music

The music has been created by Ryo Kunihiko, one of the world's leading composers of movie and television soundtracks. A sample of the soundtrack can be heard in the background by visiting the official Korean site.

Skill Chains

Depending on the weapon you use, you'll have access to its skill chains. Skills can be purchased from Markus (name may change) and must correspond to its appropriate slot in the chain. The length of the skill chain can not be modified.

PvPvE System

The end game of Aion will revolve around battles within the Abyss (PvP Zone). Within the Abyss are castles where large scale battles will take place. The game currently does not allow factions to fight within their own. Guilds in control of a castle are entitled to funding from taxes and players within the faction get specials from NPCs.[8][9]

The participation in PvP is rewarded with PvP "Points". The game ranks you as you win battles against fellow players. At certain ranks your wings will change in appearance to show your status. Also certain items can be purchased with these points like high end armors and weapons.

Raids

Raids will consist of a maximum party size of 6 per group.

Weapon & Armor System

The game will feature a system to allow a player to reuse the graphic of the weapon they like and craft it with the stats of another. This adds another layer of customization and strategy by allowing the player to look exactly as they want without sacrificing better stats.[10]

Release Date

NCsoft planned to perform a closed beta test on June 28~29 and on July 31, but was later delayed till October 31, 2007 for developmental reasons. [11] According to Aion's Senior Designer Ken Choi the scheduled simultaneous world wide (Asia, Europe and the U.S.) release date will be before the summer of 2008.[12]

Ken Choi's exact quote from the Gamona on Tour: Interview mit Ken Choi is:

Sometime early in 2008, we think before summer. It will be released both in Asia and Europe and the U.S. There will be some time difference for localization but we are aiming to have the launches as close as possible.

Subscription Fees

Currently the testing is in closed beta. At the moment the game is priced, according to NCsoft, at $14.99/month flat fee but this may be subject to change.

A while ago everybody was focused on E3, and now everybody is focused on Games Convention in Leipzig. Unfortunately, that results in a brief period of official news dry. Hold on until the GC, though. Aion is going to be there. And you know it's the largest gaming convention in the world. {{cite web}}: |first= missing |last= (help) – EU Community Coordinator
