Revision as of 00:19, 13 October 2008
The WikiProject Non-tropical storms is a WikiProject that some Wikipedians have developed to provide an encyclopedic overview of non-tropical storms, including extratropical cyclones, winter storms, nor'easters, and European windstorm. The project was developed on December 23, 2007, as a daughter project of the WikiProject Meteorology and a sister project of the WikiProject Tropical cyclones and the WikiProject Severe weather. As of July 2008, 184 articles are within the scope of the project. However, this number is expected to go up with new articles being created and new articles being assessed under the WikiProject Non-tropical storms.

Guidelines
Non-tropical storm should be created if they had widespread, unusual, or extreme effects. They generally should include Meteorological Synopsis, Preparations, Effects, and Aftermath, and other sections as they are needed.
Articles
Non-tropical storm articles differ in format. Articles should consist of the following:
- Every article must have a decently-sized lead section which gives a brief overview of the storm in general. A description of what type of storm it was, when it formed, when it dissipated, and where it affected. Preferably, for longer articles, a second paragraph with information about effects and damages should exist. An example of this is February 2007 North America Winter Storm.
- Wherever possible, there should be an infobox. For the majority of the articles, {{Infobox winter storm}} should be used, and all parameters should be filled in. If the number of deaths, for example, is disputed, it is important to include a reference. An example of a proper infobox is in North American blizzard of 2008.
- If an article focuses on a storm which was rare in some aspects (for example, a snow event which strikes China), an effort should be made to write a section which provides information as to why it occurred and why it is rare. An example of this is 2008_Chinese_winter_storms#Causes
- One of the most important sections of an article is the Meteorological Synopsis, Storm history or History section. This should provide an in-depth study of the storms' origins, track, peak intensity and dissipation. An example is Mid-December 2007 North American Winter storms#Meteorological_synopsis.
- In some significant storms, information regarding preparations is often found. Any information including but not limited to weather advisories, press releases, snow removal, planning and evacuations could be added. An example of this is Late November 2006 Nor'easter#Preparations.
- One of the—if not the—most important aspects to an ideal non-tropical storm article is a comprehensive Impact section. For some storms that affect a widespread area, it is often good practice to split the impact section into subsections, usually organized by state, as seen in Mid-Atlantic United States flood of 2006#Impact. If precipitation amounts are found, a chart, similar to in Mid-December 2007 North American Winter storms#Northeastern United States December 13 storm could be added. This is optional, and will not usually affect the quality of an article. Damages, fatalities and injuries at the bare minimum should be included in this section.
Images
All articles should have a picture of damage, radar, or satellite of the non-tropical storm whenever possible.
Winter Season
Most winter seasons have an article that lists the significant storms of that season. All seasons winter storm articles should link to the separate storm articles, if any articles exist. Winter season articles should indclude every significant winter storm the occurred across the globe, generally from July 1 to June 30. They should include a brief description of the meteorological history, and should consist of mostly impact and effects.
Naming
- Note: For other naming issues, you may ask on the project talk page or contact one of the project members
In the case of naming of articles, storms should be named North American winter storm of XX, with the name of the area affected in the beginning, the type of storm, and the month in which it occurred. Nor'easters should be named in the same maner. Windstorms should be named Windstorm XX in the case of named windstorms. Other storms such as floods should be named similar to 2008 Midwest Flooding, with the year as the first 4 characters, the area it affected, and Flooding at the end of the title.
