Akodon includes Chalcomys, Hypsimys, and Microxus, but does not include Deltamys, Thaptomys, Thalpomys, Bolomys and Necromys.
Chalcomys, Hypsimys, and Microxus have been synonymized under the genus Akodon, and Chroeomys has been placed under Abrothrix.

A southern clade, including the genera Abrothrix, Chelemys, Geoxus, Notiomys, and Pearsonomys, consists of the '"[Abrothricines]]" and has recently been recognized as separate from the tribe Akodontini in the strict sense, but a separate tribe for the "Abrothricines" has not yet been formally recognized.
The tribe Abrothrichini has recently been split from the akodontines.

Akodontini is the second most speciose tribe of the subfamily Sigmodontinae. It includes at least 106 living species in 20 genera and is distributed mainly in the southern half of South America, with only two genera extending into Guyana (Podoxymys) and Venezuela (Necromys). It also includes genera previously placed in tribe Scapteromyini. The following genera are now generally recognized:

Chalcomys, Hypsimys, and Microxus have been synonymized under the genus Akodon, and Chroeomys has been placed under Abrothrix.

A southern clade, including the genera Abrothrix, Chelemys, Geoxus, Notiomys, and Pearsonomys, consists of the '"[Abrothricines]]" and has recently been recognized as separate from the tribe Akodontini in the strict sense, but a separate tribe for the "Abrothricines" has not yet been formally recognized.
