Balaka, population 14,298 (1998), is a township in the Southern Region of Malawi, the headquarters of the Balaka District.
A growing commercial center on the road from Zomba to Lilongwe, as well as on a Blantyre-Salima rail route, it was formerly a boma of Machinga District, before the Balaka District was created in 1998.
