Tan Ajahn Amaro is Co-abbot of Abhayagiri Monastery (with Ajahn Pasanno), in Redwood Valley, California, USA.
Ajahn Amaro has been ordained in the Thai Forest Tradition since 1978. He was born "Jeremy Horner," in Kent, England, 1956. After earning a degree at Bedford College, University of London (studying psychology and physiology), he encountered the Dhamma in Northeastern Thailand, in 1978. He took anagarika precepts and, four months later, samanera ordination at Wat Pah Nanachat during that visit. In 1979, he took upasampada from Ajahn Chah.
Ajahn Amaro lived in Thailand for two years. He has also lived at Chithurst Monastery, Harnham Vihara and Abhayagiri. He is author of a book about his 830-mile walk to Harnham Vihara, called Tudong: The Long Road North (1984).
