Hockley Tunnels

Hockley Tunnel is a railway tunnel in Hockley, Birmingham, England.

Past

Was used by GWR passenger trains travelling to Wolverhampton from Birmingaham and was one of two tunnels passed through on their Birmingham - Wolverhampton line. The next three stations northbound would have been Soho & Winson Green railway station and then Handsworth & Smethwick railway station and The Hawthorns railway station. Trains may have gone further south after using the tunnel, but most where for local servies.

Present

The tunnel is lit on the Midland Metro side, enable the tram driver to see through the tunnel. The Midland Metro stops at tram stops built over former railway stations former Soho & Winson Green railway station is know Soho (Benson Road) and thenHandsworth & Smethwick railway station is Handsworth (Booth St) while The Hawthorns remains the same name.

Facts

  • There are two tram stops on either side of this tunnel.
  • Tunnel is about half a mile long.
  • The tunnel is electrified with overhead cables
  • Tunnel closed to trains during the 1970's.
  • Re-opened to passengers 1980's trains & 1999 for Metro.
