Mato Vodopić

Mato Vodopić (born in Dubrovnik December 13, 1816 and died c.1893) was the bishop of Dubrovnik from July 3, 1882 until his death in 1893, and wrote poems for some special occasions, and was a storyteller and collector of folk ballads. He wrote in Croatian language.

He was the folklore realist and the first wrighter of novels in Croatian language in recent Croatian literature.

His first work (unfinished by him) the novel Marija Konavoka. It was published in more parts from 1863. As interesting thing, this work was finished in cooperation of his brother Niko, Juraj Carić and Marcel Kušar.

His second, short novel had title Tužna Jele, from 1868. This work was very popular among Dubrovnikans and Konavleans (many times played on Dubrovačke ljetnje igre).

His third novel was (unfinished) Na doborskijem razvalinam, published in unfinished form in 1881.

His fourth work is novel Đenevrija, a story from the (at that time) Dubrovnik's suburb Pile. Interesting thing about this work, is that the manuscript is found after his death. Vice Medini i Niko Vodopić found it among Mato's stuff.
