Message in a Haunted Mansion is a first-person adventure computer game, based loosely on a book of the same name. The book is part of a popular mystery series, created in 1930 by Edward Stratemeyer. The heroine of the books, as well as the computer game, is named Nancy Drew. It takes place in San Francisco, California. The game was released in 2000 by Her Interactive.

Characters

Rose Green -- The woman who owns the Victorian mansion and wants to get the place turned into a bed and breakfast by next month with her friend Abby. Several accidents have caused her to worry about opening on time.

Abby Sideris -- A friend of Rose who is helping out with renovations. She is very spiritual, and believes in ghosts. At one point in the game, she holds a séance.

Charlie Murphy -- A young workman who is helping Rose with renovations, due to his inexpensive rates. He is in the basement most of the time.

Louis Chandler -- An antique dealer who runs Chandler Interiors and specializes in the Victorian Period. He works in the library, and is helping Rose with choosing authentic decor.

Plot

Nancy is helping Rose, a friend of Nancy's house maid, get settled into an old Victorian mansion in San Francisco that she is turning into a bed and breakfast. Strange accidents are slowing down the renovation, and Nancy is trying to figure out who, or what, is trying to scare everyone away. According to legend, a fortune in long-lost gold is hidden somewhere on the property and someone might be creating these "accidents" to scare everyone away.

As Nancy explores the mansion she experiences some strange things occuring, such as doors slamming, ghosts in the mirror, and odd sounds.

According to the legend of the gold a bandit known as El Diablo Valdez fell in love with an actress Lizzie Applegate. After robbing a huge sum of gold he left it for her in the mansion, which she previously owned. However, he hid the gold in a secret location and Lizzie died before she could find it. It is said that the spirits of Valdez and Lizzie still haunt the mansion looking for the gold.

Second Chances

There are many ways of accidents in this game where the player has to use the second chance option. Some of them are:

    • Loosening the chandelier too much so that it falls and breaks.
    • Not putting out the fire in time.
    • Going through the secret passage without a lantern.
    • Spending too long going through Louis's briefcase and getting caught.
    • Telling Louis that they found "Gum Bo Fu" in a book instead of in a magazine.
    • Staying in Abby's room after 6pm and getting caught.
    • Letting the culprit get away.

Trivia

Note: Series has nothing to do with the plot but it does make finding the Easter egg (media) easier.

  • The jewelry box is the same jewelry box in the drawer under Camille's doll collection in Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon
  • The magazine on Abby's desk in her bedroom is the same from Stay Tuned for DangerAnd is the same one lisa was holding in Treasure in the royal tower.
  • After the player inserts the Phoenix’s eye into the phoenix, set your alarm clock for 4 a.m. Go to the attic and open the box next to the baby doll head
  • Do the above but, instead set the alarm clock for 3 p.m. Go to the parlor and answer the phone.
