Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Idag (talk | contribs) at 15:29, 1 June 2008 (→‎{{la|Ayn Rand}}). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

    Current requests for protection

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Great power (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Protect or Semi-protection Many revisions to this article recently especially from IP users calling Russia a current superpower, the USA a former superpower and listing of two regional powers as different levels of almost being a great power. Suspicion of sockpuppertry and getting close to 3RR limits with no one really talking. Some assistance would be welcomed. Thanks UKPhoenix79 (talk) 10:41, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia:Huggle/Whitelist (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Semi-protection. Should only be updated by Huggle, and Huggle users must be autoconfirmed. Could cause problems if tampered with. (This is pre-emptive protection, but so was protection of Wikipedia:Huggle/Config, which could similarly cause problems if tampered with) -- Gurchzilla (talk) 09:56, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protected indefinitely PeterSymonds (talk) 10:00, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Ayn Rand (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Indefinite semi-protection Blocked user has been using dynamic anon IPs to get around his block and other anons seem to be joining in on the vandalism action. [1][2][3] Idag (talk) 06:44, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Please supply the user name of the blocked user so we can judge whether these are IP sockpuppets or just an anonymous user with a POV to push. CIreland (talk) 10:57, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Spinoza1111[4] He has self-identified as Edward Nilges and he has a very unique (i.e. rambling) writing style[5]. The Ayn Rand page had to be semi-protected in April and May because of his edits and now it seems like he's returned with a vengeance. Idag (talk) 15:29, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

California Gold Rush (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Indefinite semi-protection This featured article is often accessed for school papers, and as a result suffers from a high rate of anon IP vandalism. For some reason, this vandalism has recently increased. NorCalHistory (talk) 06:06, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 1 month, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. --Oxymoron83 09:29, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection vandals keep blanking content without a reason. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 02:19, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a note, Lord Sesshomaru has been removing sourced material. Jtrainor (talk) 02:31, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On the contrary, I have been reverting your vandalism and the anon's. Check the history page. Nice try though. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 02:37, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reverting an editor isn't vandalism. Follow WP:CIVIL-- it's not optional just because someone is on the other side of a content dispute from you. Jtrainor (talk) 08:05, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fully protected for 3 days: obvious edit war. As a side "removing sourced material" is not against any policy and none of the disputants have been "vandalizing". CIreland (talk) 11:17, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Christina Ricci (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Long-term semi-protect - Persistent anonymous vandalism is occuring from different IPs who have been inserting the same inaccurate information for weeks. All IPs are through Hughes Network Systems. Some AIVs result in a block; others don't because it's the only vandalism from that IP on that day. I also made a report at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. The administrator who responded said he could only protect it for a few days. Immediately after the protection expired, the vandal resumed the vandalism. Here are the diffs for the vandalism: [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14].

    These are the IP addresses: 66.82.9.88 (talk · contribs), 66.82.9.109 (talk · contribs), 69.19.14.15 (talk · contribs), 69.19.14.18 (talk · contribs), 69.19.14.21 (talk · contribs), 69.19.14.30 (talk · contribs),69.19.14.36 (talk · contribs).

Another possibility is a range block since the IPs cluster within specific ranges. Thanks Ward3001 (talk) 21:09, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protected for 2 weeks. CIreland (talk) 11:01, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Current requests for unprotection

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Current requests for significant edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

History of Vietnam (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

The page contains a highly offensive paragraph, which cannot be substantiated. In addition, the paragraph in question contradicts information from other Wikipedia articles and reliable sources.

Therefore, I request that the page be unprotected to enable the removal of the offending paragraph. I have explained why the paragraph is offensive under Talk:History_of_Vietnam#Disputed_paragraph. 122.105.151.167 (talk) 12:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Growing Earth Theory (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Long-Term full protection The page has already been proposed for deletion and a decision to keep was awarded, indicating that the page is a merited entry based on it being a "notable fringe theory". Users with mainstream science affiliations are engaged in a long-term effort to merge it with other pages (here and here) in order to subvert this decision and remove the page from Wikipedia, as evident in the cited discussions. The same users with science affiliations are engaged in disruptive editing of the page in order to impose a mainstream science bias towards it, even though it is already categorized as pseudoscience. All this is in disregard of the decision already given that the page is merited as a notable fringe theory. It is requested that the merger proposal tags be removed and the page be protected against this activity. MichaelNetzer (talk) 04:38, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

unprotection ..It got Vandalized a long time ago, in 2007..........i think now its time to unprotect for the time being.......just because its protected it doesnt mean that it wont get vandalized....any user can edit it when his/her account reaches 4 days old, and can simply vandalize it then......so protecting it is not the answer...the answer it to simply warn the person who vandalizes and if he/she still keeps vandalizing then block him/her.......so, i think it should have another chance and be unproteted........ —Preceding unsigned comment added by FSFS (talkcontribs) 18:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

semi-protect. Same anonymous IPs are continually post that the win by Lisgar Collegiate vs. University of Toronto Schools in 2008 National Championship was "controversial". Issue debated on talk pages and consensus reached that while the game was close, the decision is not controversial (upon video review, losing team was beaten by both the clock and end of game siren - hence it was a clean win). Nonetheless, same 3 IP addresses continue to change main article (multiple reverts). Diplomatic08 (talk) 01:46, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
