Draft of article for "Andrew Legg"...

Dr. Andrew Legg is a Tasmanian musician & director of the ARIA award-nominated Southern Gospel Choir, which he runs through the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. He is head of contemporary music and acting director of the Conservatorium, as well as a contemporary piano & keyboard tutor.[1]

Legg is trained as a classical pianist, composer and teacher but is best known for his work in contemporary music, especially gospel, soul and jazz.[2]

In recent years he has established an international reputation performing with some of the most respected gospel choirs and artists in the USA, including Kirk Franklin, Marvin Weatherford and Xanielle Davis. He has undertaken postgraduate studies at the Tuskegee Institute and the Martin Luther King University examining Afro American history and the growth of black gospel music. [3] He gained his PhD in 2008.

The Southern Gospel Choir

Legg formed the Southern Gospel Choir and the humourously-named "Very Righteous Gospel Band" in 2000, soon after becoming a staff member at the Conservatorium.[4]

Other Groups

Legg is also known as a member of Hobart bands The Giant Hamsters and the Conservatorium's "Ensemble In Residence" iCon, in which he plays piano and Rhodes. iCon includes fellow Conservatorium lecturers & tutors Alistair Dobson (saxophone) and Kelly Ottaway (vibraphone), as well as Randal Muir (Hammond organ) and Steve Marskell (drums).[5]
