Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:41, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nyaniponika Mahathera

Does anyone know where the temple of Nyaniponika Mahathera is? It is mentioned in the article Georg Schafer. — Sebastian 07:59, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Mahathera means the great thero or the great monk. Here's some info about him.[1][2] --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie 08:17, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I had thought it was a place name! I just found that we already have an article on him: Nyanaponika Thera. Maybe that was his earlier name? Or maybe he was just modest and that's what he called himself? Anyway, I'll make a redirect and add "Mahathera" to the existing article. — Sebastian 18:55, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rajapaksha College

A newbie has created an article for Rajapaksha College, but it's written entirely in Sinhala (at least I think it's Sinhala). I'm hoping someone here can help out with the translation. Wl219 23:48, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for bringing it to our notice Wl219. I also copied the Sinhalese text to the Sinhalese Wikipedia here. --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 01:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bilateral relations discussion

I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:10, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

South Asian countries as a Wikipedia:Featured topic

The South Asian WikiProjects have been tremendously productive, which I congratulate you for, and I just wanted to let you know that we're very close to meeting the criteria for a Featured topic covering the countries of the region. Infobox for Towns and villages of Sri Lanka

I think it is a good time for us to come up with a infobox specialized for Sri Lankan towns and vilages.Template in Tamil Wikipedia, an example in Ratnapura page. I don't know weather we have a infobox in English wiki.--Terrance 13:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We can shrink this one and turn it into the Sri Lankan version, isn't it. --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie 16:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah good idea. We can get rid of all the fields we don't need, and add stuff like district and province. Do we have a good (big and clear) map of Sri Lanka to display the location on? --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 17:59, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please see this discussion on my talk page for reinforcement that the idea of an infobox would be useful, especially to link together the towns and/or villages in each province or district, keeping them off the orphan page, and allowing interested readers to navigate more easily between articles. I have no idea how to make such an infobox, but you seem to be on the right track here. Keep up the good work.  :) ≈≈Carolfrog≈≈♦тос♦ 04:34, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No localised infobox is necessarily needed. This example on the left is a completely normal Infobox City. The only thing I did was to create a location map for Sri Lanka (you can found it here). Of course the location map can also (relatively) cleanly be used directly, an example is on the left. There are few more possible parameters, the documentation for the location maps is here. Whether the map used in the location map is the best possible to use is another matter... or whether it is even correctly used in the examples (I think it's ok, but I'm often wrong :D). In any case it can very easily be replaced by any equirectangular map, and such change is completely invisible in wikicode at article level. Cheers, – Sadalmelik 21:30, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Original version

Looks great. Nice stuff Sadalmelik. And the location of Kandy looks to be okay. I wouldn't mind a slightly better map though. This one is a little too green in my opinion. Just came across this map Image:Karnataka locator map.svg which looks a lot better. Anyone who could edit svg files want to try improving the one we have now? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 17:56, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I could do some experimenting during the weekend to see whether I could improve it – I have not use Inkscape much, though. I would also like to make the districts more visible, either by thickening the lines, or using colours. Perhaps using different bluish colours for districts in one province and greenish colours in another province might make the districts more visible and still keep the provinces easily identifiable. – Sadalmelik 09:25, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How's this modified version? Colours are a lot lighter, so the text should be visible, and districts are more prominent. District capitals, roads and rivers are too difficult to add to the svg file... the original creator of the file could do it quite easily, though. I could do it myself, but I don't have district borders in the format the map making software I have used would be able to read. – Sadalmelik 19:59, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Old Sinhala Place Names of Sri Lankan cities

In regard to the info box project: "Infobox for Towns and villages of Sri Lanka" I suggest that you may find it interesting to take a look at the wepages http://www.geocities.com/place.names/barelist.htm http://www.geocities.com/place.names/index.html and the maps given by them. They have been researched by a number of distinguished Sri lankan academics; much of the work is in relation to the Tamil place named in the East and the North. I have used info from that website and included them in many of the articles, including in Killinochchi, in the article on place names Bodhi dhana 04:02, 29 September 2007 (UTC)bodhi_dhana[reply]

Sinhala Slangs

Please, help to save the Sinhala Slang article. Please give our thoughts at Delete Talk Page. I beleive referances can be found and will be included in the article. Scholarly articles on Sinhala language is anyway rare on the net, and I do not agree on making it an excuse to delete the article. The native speakers of Sinhala knows that this is an accurate list of Sinhala slang. The only reason that I can think of that a native speaker of Sinhala opposes this article, is the awakwardness of seeing Sinhala profanity in print (which they are not used to), If the offending section is only the profanity, perhaps we should get rid of only that section. I also have doubts why Sri Lankan Tamil slang has only recived an warning and not recomended for deletion. The article Sri Lankan Tamil slang does not have any more referances than Sinhala Slang, and only differance is that it is not being honest about it in "Referances" section like Sinhala Slang. Citations and ISBNs

The article Sri Lanka Army and some 20 other pages[1] cite a book with a bad ISBN 995-8089-02-8. The correct one should be ISBN 955-8089-02-8. I could go through them and correct the ISBN, but perhaps something else needs to be checked as well? Is this a good book and edition to cite? Should "Sri Lanka Army" really be specified as the author? How do you typically handle errors of this kind in this WikiProject? Do you maintain a list of standard literature, and would this book be on that list? After all, it's cited in 20 articles. --LA2 10:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As the editor who cited this book in Wikipedia, here I am to answer to your questions :-) For my ease I will answer to your questions by splitting your query into parts.
  1. What you are talking is not clear to me. The ISBN is ok and there is no problem (even you too are repeating the same number). If you have any doubt about the ISBN pls check this page.
  2. Yes it's a good reputated book which was used by many number of researchers and scholars to cite the history and other stuff of the Sri Lanka Army.
  3. This book is a result of a team work of number of retired and some senior army officers. This team interviewed each army commander to cover each era of the army. If you want I can give all the names of these team members as well.
  4. I do not see any problem there.
  5. No we don't maintain any list. Cheers --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie | tool box 14:17, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah both ISBN numbers you gave appear to be the same. Can you please clarify that? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 14:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
LA2, The book is on top of my lap right now and I can confirm that the ISBN is 955-8089-02-8. --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie | tool box 14:56, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The prefix 995- should be corrected to 955-. There is just one digit wrong, and that's easy to overlook. But if you click the bad ISBN and then "Find this book at Worldcat", you will find nothing. With the good ISBN, you will find information about this book. --LA2 21:16, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Haha yeah, I can't believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out LA. We don't have much participation in this project, just two or three regular editors, do you have any suggestions how to create such a listing or handle such errors? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 21:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Welimada

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Welimada, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.

Proposed merger with WikiProject NCSLC

The above named project, Wikipedia:WikiProject NCSLC, is basically inactive. Considering that the content it deals with is also addressed by this project, I propose that it be merged into this project, and I would Support such a merger. John Carter (talk) 18:59, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the merger should be with WP:SLR Jasy jatere (talk) 15:43, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I think that project might just as easily merge into this one as well. Right now, there are three extant projects dealing with Sri Lanka, and only one of them provides assessments, Sri Lanka. Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing SLR become a subproject/taskforce/work group of the main Sri Lanka project and NCSLC merging into SLR. John Carter (talk) 15:51, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The project should not be merged with the others since it was intended to be a non-Sri Lankan, non-Tamil perspective of the war. To merge it with a namesake is not right. It is inactive and I am working on bringing together fair minded editors, thanks. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Sri Lanka

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:35, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Something worth noting is that tagging for WP Sri Lanka is incomplete. There are several articles about Sri Lankan topics which are included in the selection, but do not appear in the above link. At least Sri Lankan Civil War, Sinhalese people and Sinhala alphabet have also been selected in addition to 4 articles listed here. – Sadalmelik 07:13, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This Wikiproject is almost inactive now. Out of the 46 recorded members, very few seem to be active on Wikipedia. How about the rest of us who are still here get it organized and running again? I have never been active on this myself, but I think if we get it running again and do something noticeable we can get some attention to the Wikiproject, which will encourage more users to join. how about creating a list of inactive members first? like this.Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Members/Inactive.--chanakal (talk) 12:21, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good idea. We can send a message to each of the members asking for their feedback, and we can know who are still interested in the project. Then we can get them together and maybe under the guidance of some experienced editors (I hope some are still here) we can get it rolling again. Let's wait and see how the responses here from others will be. BTW, nice job with the National merit award. Chamal Talk ± 12:28, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image needs replacement

Hello all...

An image used in the Anil Moonesinghe article, specifically Image:Anil 2.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this and can upload it, it would be best.

You have your mission.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 22:06, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reviving WikiProject Sri Lanka

It's now almost two weeks since I sent out the first message seeking help to revive the Wikiproject, after the discussion here. Six editors have added themselves to the currently active members list so far, and I guess that's all for now. So what do you guys think about this? Do you think we can get it up and running again? Any suggestions etc? Our scope is, naturally, everything to do with Portal:Sri Lanka (which has a lot of work to be done). Can anyone tell us about how it went in the days when the project was active, so that we can know how it functioned and maybe do likewise ourselves? I was never an active member, and the project seems to have become inactive in the time I joined Wikipedia, so I don't know. Chamal Talk ± 13:49, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have relatively less experience working with articles related to Sri Lanka. I strongly feel that we need to activate this wikiproject. By experienece of other South Asian wikiprojects, I think we need to create stub articles about most of the basic entities in Sri Lanka such as districts, zones, rivers, airports, universities and so on and then work on selected articles to improve their quality. On articles with a lot of resources, we can elaborate the article and propose it for good article and finally featured article. I think we have a lot of stubs, now we need to work on selected articles to uplift it to good article. --Eukesh (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I work according to a plan. My aim is to create and make all articles in the {{|:Sri Lankan Tamil people}}Template in the near future. (1 year) and make them either Featured or good articles.Taprobanus (talk) 01:36, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
hello all, i think starting point is Sri Lanka topics somewhat similar to Taprobanus doing with Tamil people topics. Look at these red links, you can have an idea of how much poor sri lankan articles are. Haputale, Horana, Ja Ela, Kadugannawa, Kesbawa, Kinniya, Kolonnawa,Kuliyapitiya, Minuwangoda, Peliyagoda, Talawakele, Lindula, Wattegama, Weligama. as Taprobanus , i too work according to a plan. write most important articles first. like Highways, waterfalls, cities etc. but do not worry. i got the feeling this wikiproject worked or not, we all will do well to improve Sri Lankan articles. wishes!--chanakal (talk) 03:26, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But if we work together, we will be more effective and efficient. I also agree that GA and FA articles are the best way to draw attention to the Wikiproject. Maybe we can work together on improving such articles, and focus on getting them to GA/FA. The article List of Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka is currently a featured list candidate. I think we can get List of A-Grade Highways in Sri Lanka to FL as well, if we work on it a bit. Chamal Talk ± 11:42, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
i hope List of Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka make it to FL. since getting there for a Sri lankan is very rare occurrence. List of A-Grade Highways in Sri Lanka, its bit difficult to find info on each road. but we'll try.wishes!--chanakal (talk) 14:37, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is a point in working together, what I have found in my few years in Wikipedia is that people are motivated by few subject matters and tend to contribute in those overwhelmingly. Then they tire out and burn out and just fade away. Even when people work together such as WP:Karnataka, there is always one guy who keeps it going. Having said that it is so difficult to find people to copy edit and improve an article to make it encyclopedic. So may be we need to figure out a way to get help from each other to improve articles Taprobanus (talk) 21:29, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I list out inactive members. It seems to be some editors are active but either have not responded or have add their names to wrong list. may be some of them just added name to list without any intention of involving in a collaboration. need to clarify it though. --chanakal (talk) 09:09, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
