The Rocky Mountain News is a daily morning tabloid-format newspaper published in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1859 by William N. Byers during the initial flush of the Colorado Gold Rush, it was the first newspaper in the present-day state of Colorado. Throughout much of the 20th century, it published in a long rivalry with The Denver Post. The two newspapers merged operations in 2001 under a joint operating agreement [1]. They currently publish separately except on Saturday and Sunday, when they publish joint editions with editorials from both staffs. It is currently owned by Scripps. As of 2005, the Monday-Friday circulation was 267,031 [2].
