The General Dental Council, often abbreviated GDC, is a UK organisation which regulates all dental professionals in the region. Established since 1956, under the Dentists act 1984 it keeps an up-to-date register of all qualified dentists and Professionals complementary to dentistry such as: dental hygienist, dental therapist, dental nurses, dental technician, clinical dental technicians etc. and in doing so protects the general public from underqualified dental professionals. The council have 29 members, 10 of which are members of public initially appointed by Her Majesty the Queen but this role is been delegated to the National Health Service (NHS) Appointments Commission in april 2005, the rest of the members constitute of 15 dentists and 4 dental care professionals which are elected by dental professionals.

General Dental Council’s mission statement:

• To protect patients

• To promote confidence in dental professionals

• To be at the forefront of health care regulation

The GDC has many roles, in ensuring that all dental professionals keep an up to date knowledge in the field , controls the quality of dental education in the country, ensure a proper quality of care is given to the patients and help any patient who have questions or compliants, acts as a bridge of communication between the government, public and the dental professionals.
