Peter Eneas Nanyemba (Ndilimani) (born 1935 - died April 01, 1983) was a Namibian freedom fighter [1] and Commander of the Swapo Party's military wing -the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) , he died in a car accident in Lubango in the Angola's Huila Province in April 1983.

Early Life

Peter grew up in Owamboland in the north of Namibia herding cattle, while at the same time struggling to attend school. He then went to work Walvis Bay where he became discontent with the harshness of the colonial and apartheid system.

Political Career

Nanyemba left Namibia in 1962 to join others already abroad in order to wage the struggle from outside of Namibia. He served as a Swapo representative in East Africa with a base in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. During the Tanga Consultative Conference, he was elected Secretary of Defence, a position he held until his tragic death on the 01 April 1983 in Lubango. He was key in arranging training and equipping for PLAN, he played a pivotal in the struggle for independence along with other comrades , the likes of Sam Nujoma.

Recognition

A primary school was built and named after him in Angola in 2005 , also a rehabilitation of the cemetery and a monument outside Lubango at the cost of N$ 8,5 million [2]

Death

Nanyemba died in a car accident on April 01, 1983 in Angola .
