The Al-Zahra College for Women is a private college in Oman. It was founded in the academic year 1999/2000 and is located in Airport Heights Muscat, Oman.

History

The Al-Zahra College for Women (ZCW) began the academic year 1999/2000 with 50 students. The college has from its foundation been associated with the Al-Ahliyya Amman University in Jordan, and is under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) of the Sultanate of Oman. When the college first opened it offered two-year diploma courses in computer science, accounting, business administration, finance & banking, English philology and literature. On 13 April 2003, the MoHE allowed the continuation of the diploma courses as undergraduate courses. A year later, in February 2004, the College asked the MoHE for permission to begin awarding its own bachelor's degrees; this was granted. That year the college also set up a Department of Graphic Design. For quality assurance and strategic planning a "Planning & Quality Assurance Department" was established on 1 September 2005.

On 27 May 2012 BankDhofar sponsored an open day at the Al Zahra College for Women which was part of an entire week of activities including exhibitions and a showcase of Omani food, traditional handicrafts and Omani fashion. The Open Day was very well attended by students and staff of the college.[1]

Campus

The college has two main buildings. The department of computer science and the administration is housed in a large villa. The other departments are housed in four adjacent buildings.

Structure and composition

The university currently consists of four departments:

  • English Language & Literature Department
  • Computer Technology Department
  • Commercial & Financial Sciences Department, with the subdivisions
    • Accounting Division
    • Business Administration Division
    • Financial & Banking Sciences Division
  • Graphic Design Department

In the academic year 2005/06, the college had 87 employees: 39 teachers, two teaching assistants, 17 administrative staff, 20 assistants and 12 workers.

Academic links

It is common for private higher education institutions in Oman have an academic connection to a foreign university or college. Al-Zahra College for Women maintains links with the University of Sunderland, which awards the academic degree of Bachelor (BSc (Hons) Applied Business Computing). There is also an academic connection to the Al-Ahliyya Amman University.

Students and tuition fees

In 2005 the College had 1,016 women students. The tuition fees for an undergraduate degree are between RO 7.395 and 8.346 R.O. (about €17,000).

Admission conditions

The recording condition of at least 50% of the Certificate of General Education are provided, which is a relatively low hurdle for admission.

Recent developments

Zahra College for Girls celebrated on Saturday 28 December 2013 the graduation ceremony of its ninth regiment of 231 students.[2]
