Autocatalytic reactions are chemical reactions in which at least one of the products is also a reactant. The rate equations for autocatalytic reactions are fundamentally nonlinear. This nonlinearity can lead to the spontaneous generation of order. A dramatic example of this order is that which is found in living systems. This spontaneous order creation seems to contradict the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This contradiction is resolved when the disorder of both the system and its surroundings are taken into account.
East Ridge High School is a school in Clermont, Florida and one of seven public high schools in Lake County. East Ridge is the largest school in Lake County. It was however intended to hold only 1,800 students at the most, This was not large enough for the ever growing population of Clermont it has more than doubled in the last five years. In total there are 3,084 Students enrolled as of January 14th. East Ridge has a good reputation and is known for its athletic programs as well as its band department receiving many national and state awards. The picture displayed is from 2002, now there is a new building labeled the "Freshman Building" officially building 21.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the disorder (entropy) of a physical or chemical system and its surroundings must increase with time. In other words, systems left to themselves must become increasingly random. To say it yet another way, orderly energy of a system like uniform motion must degrade eventually to the random motion of particles in a heat bath.
East Ridge High School

History
This seems to run counter to experience. There are many instances in which physical systems spontaneously become emergent or orderly. For example, despite the destruction they do, hurricanes have a very orderly vortex motion when compared with the random motion of the air molecules in a closed room. Even more spectacular is the order created by chemical systems; the most dramatic being the order associated with life.
East Ridge High School was constructed at 13322 Excalibur Road in 2002. It is currently the newest high school in Lake County, Florida. The school was built to stop the overcrowding of their mother, now sister school, South Lake High School, which is located in Groveland.

Students
Our experience is consistent with the Second Law. The Second Law states that the total disorder of a system AND ITS SURROUNDINGS must increase with time. Order can be created in a system by an even greater decrease in order of the systems surroundings. In the hurricane example, hurricanes are formed from unequal heating within the atmosphere. The earth's atmosphere is then far from thermal equilibrium. The order of the earth's atmosphere increases, but at the expense of the order of the sun. The sun is becoming more disorderly as it ages and throws off light and material to the rest of the universe. The total disorder of the sun and the earth increases despite the fact that orderly hurricanes are generated on earth.

Sports
A similar example exists for living chemical systems. The sun provides energy to green plants. The green plants are food for other living chemical systems. The energy absorbed by plants and converted into chemical energy generates a system on earth that is orderly and far from chemical equilibrium. Here, the difference from chemical equilibrium is determined by an excess of reactants over the equilibrium amount. Once again, order on earth is generated at the expense of entropy increase of the sun. The total entropy of the earth and the rest of the universe increases, consistent with the Second Law.

They play the majority of their home games in "The Dungeon" or in their gym. Their record was 14-0.

Not all chemical reactions, however, generate order. The class of reactions most closely associated with order creation is the class of autocatalytic reactions. These are reactions in which one or more of the products are the same as one or more of the reactants. Simple autocatalytic reactions (clock reactions) are known to oscillate in time, thus creating temporal order. Other simple reactions can generate spatial separation of chemical species generating spatial order. More complex reactions are involved in metabolic pathways and metabolic networks in biological systems.
The East Ridge Knights football team is the most well known athletic team for the school, especially during its unbeaten winning streak. After the streak had ended it had mild success however it couldn't beat the Edgewater Eagle Curse for the previous three years East Ridge has played Edgewater in the playoffs for three years running, losing by a close margin every time. East Ridge was ranked No.9 for the 2008 football year in all central Florida counties, the Orlando Sentinels teamed up with www.fridaynightfootball.net to give the ratings.

School Ratings
The transition to order as the distance from equilibrium increases is not usually continuous. Order typically appears abruptly. The threshold between the disorder of chemical equilibrium and order is known as a phase transition. The conditions for a phase transition can be determined with the mathematical machinery of non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

The Florida Department of Education gave the school a "D" rating in 2003-2004.
Chemical reactions
East Ridge received a "C" rating in the 2004-2005 school year.

Band Program
Chemical equilibrium
The ERHS Band Program is under the direction of Jack Hart. The band program at East Ridge High School provides a well-rounded musical experience for its students with special emphasis placed in the area of Marching, Jazz and Concert Band performance, as well as Color Guard, Winter Guard, and Indoor Percussion. Since the school has been opened, the band program has consistently received a superior rating, with the exception of the 2004-2005 concert band received a rating of excellent.

Concert Season
In chemical equilibrium the forward and reverse reaction rates are such that each chemical species is being created at the same rate it is being destroyed. In other words, the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction.
In the 2006-2007 school year, East Ridge High School's Wind Ensemble went to State Competition receiving scores of good, excellent and good resulting in an overall good rating. This is the first time East Ridge has gone to State Competition for Concert Band. The band was directed by Jack Hart and was composed of 51 students.

Jazz Band
:<math> k_+ \left\{ A \right\}^\alpha \left\{B \right\}^\beta = k_{-} \left\{S \right\}^\sigma\left\{T \right\}^\tau \,</math>
The East Ridge Jazz Band constantly gets superiors year round. The past 2 years, the jazz band won grand champions at Lakeside Jazz Festival at Port Orange. Also, for the first time in school history, and Mr. Hart's career, the jazz band got straight superiors at state competition at West Port High School in Ocala.

Marching Band
Here, the curly brackets indicate the amount of the chemical species, in moles, and k+ and k− are rate constants.
The East Ridge Band is most known for its Marching band program, which have received straight superiors since their inauguration. Since 2003, they have become the largest marching band in Lake County, and in their district in the Florida Bandmasters Association.

On October 27th, 2007 the Marching Knights went to the Ancient City Presentation of Bands in St. Augustine where they received a final score of 85.5, winning their first ever competition.
Far from equilibrium
Although the band tried their hardest they could not make it to the finals at the state competition in 2007. They placed 9th in class 5a with a score of 82.34
Far from equilibrium, the forward and reverse reaction rates no longer balance and the concentration of reactants and products is no longer constant. For every forward reaction <math>\alpha </math> molecules of A are destroyed. For every reverse reaction <math>\alpha </math> molecules of A are created. The change in number of moles of A is then

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ A \right\} =-\alpha k_+ \left\{ A \right\}^\alpha \left\{B \right\}^\beta +\alpha k_{-} \left\{S \right\}^\sigma\left\{T \right\}^\tau \,</math>

Percussion
and similarly for the other reactant and products.
The East Ridge Percussion and Drumline (was) directed under Ryan Wright. Since his arrival in 2005, the percussion have received their highest ratings in marching and indoor percussion, in which he started for the school. The indoor percussion have even brought in band members from other instruments to play.

In 2006-2007, the East Ridge Percussion section competed for the first time ever in FFCC Indoor Percussion competitions. Throughout the season, the section competed with various other schools' groups, each varying in size and skill. At every competition, East Ridge's line placed no lower than 3rd, and receiving the highest scores in 2 competitions, only to place 2nd in one of the two due to a timing penalty. At State championships, the section brought together all of their hardwork and practice to place 3rd overall, narrowly missing 2nd and first by less than a point.
:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ B \right\} =-\beta k_+ \left\{ A \right\}^\alpha \left\{B \right\}^\beta +\beta k_{-} \left\{S \right\}^\sigma\left\{T \right\}^\tau \,</math>

In 2008, Mr. Wright left East Ridge to become the head director of rival school, South Lake High School. A new director has be hired to oversee the percussion section. Named Santa Clause. He is now running the band with an iron fist.

The school offers a wide variety of clubs:

Autocatalytic reactions
East Ridge High School has received numerous bomb threats and rumored gun shootings, starting in 2006 a day before spring break started for Lake County students. A bomb threat was called in on April 7, stating that a bomb was located within the first four buildings. Students were taken to the football field and later, the auditorium. This lasted for over 3 hours.

These threats became more frequent in 2007 when four bomb threats were called in. One of these threats was in March, and the other three were called in April. Two of the threats were called within the same week. After the last bomb threat, students were found in a bathroom making the call and were expelled from Lake County Public Schools.

Gun Shooting rumor
:<math> A + B \rightleftharpoons 2B</math>
On May 7, 2007 a rumor was spread , supposedly from a junior, about a shooting that would occur on the seniors' last day of school (May 11, 2007). It was initially said that seniors would be shot, but it soon changed to killing those wearing green (the senior color), and eventually athletes. By Thursday, many students believed that this rumor was false and that the shooting was not going to take place. However, over 1,200 students were absent from school, including 300 seniors.

Tardy Policy Riot rumor
with the rate equations
In the 2006-2007 school year of East Ridge High School, a rumor circulated around the school that there was going to be a riot over a new, strict tardy policy. The rumor was said to have started as a bulletin made over MySpace and circulated among the students. The rumor was first said to be secret and only for students, but of course it reached its way to teachers, administrators, and the entire school.
The riot was to take place on the first day of the new policy and was to happen in the courtyard between the main buildings between first and second period. It was said that hundreds of students were going to participate in the riot.
On the day that the new policy was to take place, an extra number of police officers were at the school to confront the riot. They had extra handcuffs to restrain the predicted amount of rioters, and teachers were also outside to get pictures of people that tried to attend the riot. When it came time for the riot, there was only a mediocre group of students (around 130) in the courtyard. They were not rioting but simply standing. There were also students in the hallways yelling "Hell no, we won't go!" The principal announced during morning announcments that the students in the courtyard will be either suspended or expelled. There were no rumors that anyone was arrested. The tardy policy stayed in effect.

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ A \right\} =- k_+ \left\{ A \right\} \left\{B \right\} + k_{-} \left\{B \right\}^2 \,</math>

Lunch+Attendance Punishment
:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ B \right\} = k_+ \left\{ A \right\} \left\{B \right\} - k_{-} \left\{B \right\}^2 \,</math>.
Because the school only got a "B" grade, the school's administration decided to punish the student body by forcing health food upon the students. The much-loved Domino's Pizza , that was available on Monday's and Fridays, was removed from the menu. The administration also instituted a new Nazi like attendance policy to further punish the student body.

Pregnancy Outbreak
This reaction is one in which a molecule of species A interacts with a molecule of species B. The A molecule is converted into a B molecule. The final product consists of the original B molecule plus the B molecule created in the reaction.
After the recent football game victories there has been a major pregnancy epidemic among the varsity cheerleading squad. 75% of the squad has been diagnosed with pregnancy. This has caused much controversy over wether or not the squad is a group of Harlots. A school committee has been formed to look into the matter.

References
The key feature of these rate equations is that they are nonlinear; the second term on the right varies as the square of the concentration of B. This feature can lead to multiple fixed points of the system, much like a quadratic equation can have multiple roots. Multiple fixed points allow for multiple states of the system. A system existing in multiple macroscopic states is more orderly (has lower entropy) than a system in a single state.

Creation of order
Temporal order
Idealized example: Lotka-Volterra equation
Consider a coupled set of two autocatalytic reactions in which the concentration of one of the reactants A is much larger than its equilibrium value. In this case the forward reaction rate is so much larger than the reverse rates that we can neglect the reverse rates.

:<math> A + X \rightarrow 2X</math>

:<math> X + Y \rightarrow 2Y</math>

:<math> Y \rightarrow E</math>

with the rate equations

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ X \right\} = k_1 \left\{ A \right\} \left\{X \right\} - k_{2} \left\{X \right\}\left\{Y \right\} \,</math>

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ Y \right\} = k_2 \left\{ X \right\} \left\{Y \right\} - k_{3} \left\{Y \right\} \,</math>.

Here, we have neglected the depletion of the the reactant A, since its concentration is so large. The rate constants for the three reactions are <math>k_1</math>, <math>k_2</math>, and <math>k_3</math>, respectively.

This system of rate equations is known as the Lotka-Volterra equation and is most closely associated with population dynamics in predator-prey relationships. This system of equations has an oscillatory behavior. The amplitude of the oscillations depends on the concentration of A. Oscillations of this type are a form of emergent temporal order that is not present in equilibrium.

Another idealized example: Brusselator
Another example of a system that demonstrates temporal order is the Brusselator (see Prigogine reference). It is characterized by the reactions

:<math> A \rightarrow X</math>

:<math> 2X + Y \rightarrow 3X</math>

:<math> B + X \rightarrow Y + D</math>

:<math> X \rightarrow E</math>

with the rate equations

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ X \right\} = \left\{A \right\} + \left\{ X \right\}^2 \left\{Y \right\} - \left\{B \right\} \left\{X \right\} - \left\{X \right\} \,</math>

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ Y \right\} = \left\{B \right\} \left\{X \right\} - \left\{ X \right\}^2 \left\{Y \right\} \,</math>

where, for convenience, the rate constants have been set to 1.

The Brusselator has a fixed point at

:<math>\left\{ X \right\} = A \,</math>

:<math>\left\{ Y \right\} = {B \over A} \,</math>.

The fixed point becomes unstable when

:<math> B>1+A^2 \,</math>

leading to an oscillation of the system. Unlike the Lotka-Volterra equation, the oscillations of the Brusselator do not depend on the amount of reactant present initially. Instead, after sufficient time, the oscillations approach a limit cycle.

Real examples
Real examples of clock reactions are the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction (BZ reaction), the Briggs-Rauscher reaction, the Bray-Liebhafsky reaction and the iodine clock reaction. These are oscillatory reactions, and the concentration of products and reactants can be approximated in terms of damped oscillations.

The best-known reaction, the BZ reaction, can be created with a mixture of potassium bromate <math>(KBrO_3)</math>, malonic acid <math>(CH_2(COOH)_2)</math>, and manganese sulfate <math>(MnSO_4)</math> prepared in a heated solution of sulfuric acid <math>(H_2SO_4)</math>.

Spatial order
An idealized example of spatial spontaneous symmetry breaking is the case in which we have two boxes of material separated by a permeable membrane so that material can diffuse between the two boxes. It is assumed that identical Brusselators are in each box with nearly identical initial conditions. (see Prigogine reference)

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ X_1 \right\} = \left\{A \right\} + \left\{ X _1\right\}^2 \left\{Y_1 \right\} - \left\{B \right\} \left\{X_1 \right\} - \left\{X_1 \right\} + D_x\left( X_2 - X_1 \right)\,</math>

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ Y_1 \right\} = \left\{B \right\} \left\{X_1 \right\} - \left\{ X_1 \right\}^2 \left\{Y_1 \right\} + D_y\left( Y_2 - Y_1\right) \,</math>

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ X_2 \right\} = \left\{A \right\} + \left\{ X _2\right\}^2 \left\{Y_2 \right\} - \left\{B \right\} \left\{X_2 \right\} - \left\{X_2 \right\} + D_x\left( X_1 - X_2 \right)\,</math>

:<math>{d \over dt}\left\{ Y_2 \right\} = \left\{B \right\} \left\{X_2 \right\} - \left\{ X_2 \right\}^2 \left\{Y_2 \right\} + D_y\left( Y_1 - Y_2\right) \,</math>

Here, the numerical subscripts indicate which box the material is in. There are additional terms proportional to the diffusion coefficient D that account for the exchange of material between boxes.

If the system is initiated with the same conditions in each box, then a small fluctuation will lead to separation of materials between the two boxes. One box will have a predominance of X, and the other will have a predominance of Y.

Biological example
It is known that an important metabolic cycle, glycolysis, displays temporal order. Glycolysis consists of the degradation of one molecule of glucose and the overall production of two molecules of ATP. The process is therefore of great importance to the energetics of living cells. The global glycolysis reaction involves glucose, ADP, NAD, pyruvate, ATP, and NADH.

:<math> \mbox{glucose} + 2\mbox{ADP}+2\mbox{P}_i+2\mbox{NAD} \rightarrow 2(\mbox{pyruvate})+2\mbox{ATP}+2\mbox{NADH} \,</math>.

The details of the process are quite involved, however, a section of the process is autocatalyzed by Phosphofructokinase (PFK). This portion of the process is responsible for oscillations in the pathway that leads to the ability of the process to oscillate between an active and an inactive form. In other words, the autocatalytic reactions can turn the process off and on.

Phase transitions
The initial amounts of reactants determine the distance from chemical equilibrium of the system. The greater the initial concentrations the further the system is from equilibrium. As the initial concentration increases, an abrupt change in order occurs. This abrupt change is known as phase transition. At the phase transition fluctuations in macroscopic quantities, such as chemical concentrations, increase as the system oscillates between the orderly state and the disorderly state. Also, at the phase transition, macroscopic equations, such as the rate equations, fail. Rate equations can be derived from microscopic considerations. The derivations typically rely on a mean field theory approximation to microscopic dynamical equations. Mean field theory breaks down in the presence of large fluctuations. Therefore, since large fluctuations occur in the neighborhood of a phase transition, macroscopic equations, such as rate equations, fail. As the initial concentration increases further, the system settle into an ordered state in which fluctuations are again small. (see Prigogine reference)

Also, for the first time in school history, and Mr. Hart's career, the jazz band got straight superiors at state competition at West Port High School in Ocala.

Marching Band

The East Ridge Band is most known for its Marching band program, which have received straight superiors since their inauguration. Since 2003, they have become the largest marching band in Lake County, and in their district in the Florida Bandmasters Association.

On October 27th, 2007 the Marching Knights went to the Ancient City Presentation of Bands in St. Augustine where they received a final score of 85.5, winning their first ever competition.

Although the band tried their hardest they could not make it to the finals at the state competition in 2007. They placed 9th in class 5a with a score of 82.34

Percussion

In 2008, Mr. Wright left East Ridge to become the head director of rival school, South Lake High School. A new director has be hired to oversee the percussion section. Named Santa Clause. He is now running the band with an iron fist.

School Clubs

The school offers a wide variety of clubs:

Discipline

East Ridge High School has received numerous bomb threats and rumored gun shootings, starting in 2006 a day before spring break started for Lake County students. A bomb threat was called in on April 7, stating that a bomb was located within the first four buildings. Students were taken to the football field and later, the auditorium. This lasted for over 3 hours.

These threats became more frequent in 2007 when four bomb threats were called in. One of these threats was in March, and the other three were called in April. Two of the threats were called within the same week. After the last bomb threat, students were found in a bathroom making the call and were expelled from Lake County Public Schools.[citation needed]

Gun Shooting rumor

On May 7, 2007 a rumor was spread [2], supposedly from a junior, about a shooting that would occur on the seniors' last day of school (May 11, 2007).

In the 2006-2007 school year of East Ridge High School, a rumor circulated around the school that there was going to be a riot over a new, strict tardy policy. The rumor was said to have started as a bulletin made over MySpace and circulated among the students. The rumor was first said to be secret and only for students, but of course it reached its way to teachers, administrators, and the entire school.[citation needed] The riot was to take place on the first day of the new policy and was to happen in the courtyard between the main buildings between first and second period.

Lunch+Attendance Punishment

Because the school only got a "B" grade, the school's administration decided to punish the student body by forcing health food upon the students. The much-loved Domino's Pizza , that was available on Monday's and Fridays, was removed from the menu. The administration also instituted a new Nazi like attendance policy to further punish the student body.

Pregnancy Outbreak

After the recent football game victories there has been a major pregnancy epidemic among the varsity cheerleading squad. 75% of the squad has been diagnosed with pregnancy. This has caused much controversy over wether or not the squad is a group of Harlots. A school committee has been formed to look into the matter.
