Admiral Seymour School is a neighboring school of Strathcona Elementary located in the 1130 Keefer Street of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. After Strathcona Elementary, Seymour is the oldest School in Vancouver, and serves Downtown eastside, Woodland, and Hastings areas of Vancouver.

History

The original Admiral Seymour School was started in 1900 and completed in 1901. It was named after Sir Edward Hobart Seymour, an Admiral in the British Navy.

The School contained eight classrooms. It was built in the most handsome and latest design of the day. The outside fire escape was built for added safety.

In 1906, the construction of the second Admiral Seymour School building began. The school opened for pupils in 1907.

In the winter of 1971, parents fought the Canadian National Railway, Burlington Northern Railway, and the City Council. The Parents demanded an overpass be built over the railway, which separated the school from the neighborhood projects. After a long fight, the Canadian National Railway promised a time-line for the beginning of the building of the overpass.

Seymour Elementary celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2000.

Trivia

Seymour is the only school in Vancouver to win 3 city Championships (Basketball, Soccer, and Flag football in ‘05) from its 05'grade 7 grads. The team had outstanding coaching from Scooter and Paul and great supporter of the Seymour principal Rick Logie. With their first championship, the principle put on the song we Are the Champions by Queen on the P.A. Following the next two championships.

Soccer

The Championship winning team started off at Mt.Pleasent where the zones were held. The team was lead by the dynamic line called the "Shmeir" line. The team easily finished 1st overall in their zone and had a spot in the cities at point Grey. Once at point Grey, the soccer team battled their way into the finals. The semi-finals game vs. Renfrew was a nail-biter and it went into a shootout. Seymour beat Renfrew, and went in to the finals to vs. Moberley for a easy win.
