Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state of India, attract thousands of students from all over India. It has a large number of Schools, Degree Colleges, Universities & Research Institutions and Colleges.

Universities at Lucknow

Lucknow is home to a number of universities offering courses on campus. These universities are:-

University of Lucknow, also known as Lucknow University, was founded in 1921. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in India. The motto of the university is "Light and Learning". Some of its most well known departments are Sociology, Business Administration, Botany, Geology, Chemistry, Western History and Economics. The university has an attractive campus in an area called Badshah Bagh. The famous Tagore Library of the university overlooks a park and an artificial canal, which gives the university a nice ambience.

Uttar Pradesh Technical University, also known as UPTU, was founded in 1998. It is one of the largest technical educational institute in India. The motto of the university is to provide high quality technically skilled manpower to the country. Some of its most well known branches are B.Tech in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, etc., MCA (Master of Computer Application), MBA (Master of Business Administration), B.Pharma, B.Arch, etc. The university has more than 300 affiliated Engineering Colleges with some prestigious colleges like HBTI Kanpur, IET Lucknow,BIET Jhansi, KNIT Sultanpur, MMMIT Gorakhpur, JSS Noida, IMS Gaziabad, BBDNITM Lucknow,Institute of Environment and Management (IEM) Lucknow etc.

Central Drug Research Institute, CDRI, a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India, (CSIR India) was inaugurated in 1951 by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. The institute is involved in biomedical research has the infrastructure and skills to develop a drug "right from concept to market". It is focussed in basic and applied research related to metabolic disorders as well as tropical diseases like malaria, filaria and leishmaniasis. The major divisions of CDRI are Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Molecular and Structural Biology, Experimental Medicine, Toxicology, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmaceutics and Animal House. It also offers doctorate degree in association with JNU, New Delhi.

Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, IITR formerly known as Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, is also a constituent laboratory of CSIR, that was established in 1965 with the motto of "Safety to Environment & Health and Service to Industry", and is the only institution of its kind in South-East Asia. The institute is dedicated towards Fundamental and Applied Toxicology research fosussing on major thrust areas such as Genetic Toxicology, Aquatic Toxicology, Nanomaterial Toxicology, Food Toxicology, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Carcinogenesis and Toxicogenomics.

Besides these Lucknow is home to another constituent laboratory of CSIR, the National Botanical Research Institute, NBRI, the country's premier plant sciences research centre, actively involved in the fields of Plant molecular biology, Biotechnology and Transgenics. It conducts muti-disciplinary research on areas ranging from traditional Taxonomy to cutting edge areas of Modern Biology such as Bioinformatics and In-Silico Biology.

Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants, CIMAP is another premier plant science research institute, which is a constituent of CSIR too, is involved in research related to medicinal plants, bioinformatics, bioprospecting etc. It possesses superb research infrastructure on DNA Fingerprinting, Proteomics and Plant Molecular Biology.

All these institutions portrays Lucknow on the world's Biotechnology map. The Ph.D. programme offered by such prestigious institutions attract students from all over India to pursue research. Postdoctoral training as well as M.Sc. or M.Tech (Summer) training is also offered.

However, the city's lack of job opportunities reults in a 'brain drain 'which means that young people leave the city for greener pastures in other places like Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.
