The Think Before You Speak Campaign is a television, radio, and magazine advertising campaign developed to raise awareness of the common use of anti-LGBT vocabulary among youth, created by Advertising Council, and GLSEN.[1] Think before you speak is the Advertising Council's first gay and lesbian awareness campaign, and is trying to achieve an ending to the use of offensive phrases such as "that's so gay."[2] Television commercials for the campaign include singer, Hillary Duff, as well as comedian, Wanda Sykes.

The Campaign

The campaign aims to reduce homophobic slang among youth, and educate parents and teachers on how to create a safe environment for LGBT teens.[3] GLSEN and Ad Council have reported that over half of all students have heard homophobic remarks being said often at school, and 9 out 10 LGBT students have been harassed at school over the last year.[4] The Campaign has encouraged students to get involved, by starting a Gay-Straight Alliance, creating a safer environment for LGBT students.[5]
