Caramel (Arabic:سكر بنات Sukkar banat) is a 2007 Lebanese film, the first feature film by the lebanese director Nadine Labaki. It is set to be released in late 2007. The film have premiered on March 20 during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, in the Directors' Fortnight section [2][3][4]. This film have ran for the Caméra d'or during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.[5]

In the title of Caramel, Nadine refers to an epilation method used in the middle east that consists of heating sugar, water and lemon juice. She tries as well to refer to the "idea of sweet and salt, sweet and sour".[6]

Synopsis

Layal (Nadine Labaki) works in a beauty salon in Beirut along with 3 other women. Each one has a problem: Layal has a relationship with a married man, Nisrine (Yasmine Al Masri) who is no more a virgin, will soon be married, Rima (Joanna Moukarzel) is lesbian and Jamal (Gisèle Aouad) is worried about getting old. Rose (Sihame Haddad), a tailor with a shop next to the salon, is an old lady who devoted her life to take care of her older sister, have found her first love.

  • The shooting of Caramel ended just 9 days before the Israeli war against Lebanon in July 2006.
  • Apart Nadine Labaki and Adel Karam, this is the first experience in movies for the other leading role actors.
  • Nadine Labaki is engaged to Khaled Mouzanar, the Music Composer for Caramel's soundtrack .
  • Caroline Labaki, Nadine's sister, was the one responsible of Costume Design.
  • An old clothes shop in the Beirut District of Gemmayze have been transformed into a salon where the shooting of the film took place.[6]
