City of Ember has received mixed reviews thus far, currently holding a 40% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics have unanimously agreed that the visuals and cast are superb, particularly Bill Murrary, most have expressed their dislike for the film's middling script and underwhelming action sequences. A summation of the general consensus could be found in Derek Malcolm's review: "For all the rich production values and well-known cast, City of Ember falters because of both an ordinary screenplay and dramatic detail that turns around as if there was no tomorrow. You admire the way it looks but it is a penance to get through."
