Carlos Gracie

Carlos Gracie (1901-1994) is the co-founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu the Brazilian martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) along with his younger brother Hélio Gracie. He was taught a newaza emphasized system of judo by Otávio Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese emigrant to Brazil and 4th dan Kodokan judoka. Carlos then passed the teachings on to his brothers Gastão Jr., Jorge and Hélio. In 1925, the brothers opened their first academy in Brazil, marking the beginning of art. Carlos Gracie died in 1994 at the age of 92.
