:As a general rule, any fansite that is nothing more than a discussion forum should probably not be listed per WP:ELNO. Even for those sites that offer more (related news, downloads, developer interviews, etc) only one or two major ones should be listed per WP:NOT#REPOSITORY. Better still, if the game developer maintains a list of "recognized" or "official" fansites, just link to that list rather than debating which fansites to include here. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 14:55, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

User Ozzicol creating spam article and links to his website

Ozzicol (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · blacklist hits · AbuseLog · what links to user page · count · COIBot · Spamcheck · user page logs · x-wiki · status · Edit filter search · Google · StopForumSpam) created an article called moving house which contained nothing but a how-to guide on residential moving with a link to the website housemovinghints.com. This diff[14] shows that Ozzicol claims to be the owner of that website. The user has also attempted to add links to his website to the articles on Two Men and a Truck International, Mayflower Transit, and United Van Lines, among others; as far as I can tell, all have been reverted. I have stubbified the article on moving house and asked for help at moving company in creating an attributed, article either on the process of relocating or on the process of physically moving a residential building. I have also notified the user. Is anything else required? --NellieBly (talk) 23:03, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I doubt "Moving house" is a common term, so I would've likely just prodded it for deletion.
I see that "House moving" already redirect to Structure relocation, which would be the more natural sequence for the two words. The Moving disambiguation page already covers disambigs, so no need for the awkward phrasing to redo that either. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 23:07, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough; I'll redirect to Structure relocation, which I couldn't find. Thanks! --NellieBly (talk) 23:16, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blog - COI issue --71.227.150.109 (talk) 03:42, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would hardly call the link to photos of the tunnel where the blog was linked from Spam. I was simply providing further information and linking to photos that are copyright to me that I do not wish to relinquish copies of. Removing the photography links has made the article poorer. Yet another article ruined by over-zealous editors/bots and people who's only contribution to Wikipedia now is poor administration. Neil Evans (talk) 14:57, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed - the site in question appears to be a personal website/blog of the primary contributor (see copyright tag at bottom of the EL pages). The links on some are to only an image and a comment that the image is in public domain (then should be loaded to WP or commons) - or are diary/blog style entries. Some of them are encyclopedic in writing style, providing ref - but the COI issue still remains on those. The number of articles to which the site has been linked is fairly significant. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:23, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A few notes; the individual who reported these links has been blocked for making threats of physical harm (from a different but very similar IP). Sadly, that incident combined with the objection to the links raised here may have resulted in the loss of a good editor. Bill states that he added very few of those links himself, which doesn't surprise me, as some of the topic areas probably have limited coverage elsewhere on English-language sites. As I mentioned to him, I rarely worry about .edu links unless I see mass canvassing going on. From what I can tell, most of Bill's contributions have been in the areas of content and organization. OhNoitsJamie Talk 21:31, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to add, as someone who has added links to Bill's site dating to before Bill became an editor here, that Lacus Curtius is not primarily a "personal website/blog" but a collection of public domain translations of classical texts and reference works on classical history. It is highly useful for referencing articles on classical subjects because it can be linked chapter and verse, so if a particular article makes reference to, say, Cassius Dio's Roman History or Ptolemy's Geography, the reader can follow the link in the footnote and find out exactly what Cassius Dio or Ptolemy said on the subject. That seems to me entirely within the spirit of Wikipedia in terms of making knowledge accessible. Also, since the site is not commercial and does not carry advertising, calling it "spam" seems to be misguided. I've tried following a few links to Bill's site and get a "403 forbidden" page, although I can access those pages directly, so it seems his site is blocked from Wikipedia. I would urge whoever is responsible for the block to remove it. --Nicknack009 (talk) 07:22, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See my reply below - the intial post of "personal website/blog" was based specifically on the first few links that I followed to his site (contain "diary" in the link name). I agree that many other of the links were of encyclopedic value, which is why I had added that "Some of them are encyclopedic in writing style, providing ref" - but unfortuneately I fell for the anons bait and left it as an agreement, when only a minor cleanup of a handful of links was all that was needed. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:14, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Having followed the link to the previous commenter's talk page, I see it's Bill himself who is responsible for blocking links to his site from Wikipedia. The anonymous user whose bullying forced him to do that should be ashamed of him/herself, and I would support Bill's contention that anonymous editing should be stopped. --Nicknack009 (talk) 07:37, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Given what seems to have unfortunately happened, it would be good for Bill to be asked to agree about unblocking it. I hope he does. I hope for good measure we can encourage him to return. But if he does limit himself to Citizendium, we can always copy his articles back here again, they use a free license also & the licenses are compatible. DGG (talk) 21:48, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can see, the person who openned the issue here was the same one harassing Bill. I fell for his bait and didn't verify who had added the links when I agreed with the anon above. Some of the links were inapropriate (blog/diary entries, or image-only) - but many, many more were of encyclopedic value. A partial cleanup of only the questionable ones would have been enough to meet WP guidelines (and those may not have even been submitted by Bill in the first place).
Unfortuneately, it appears that Bill chose (for Wikipedia) the worst possible outcome from the anon's harrassment and baiting. I too hope that he reconsiders and makes the sources available once again. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:08, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
FYI: I've corresponded with Bill Thayer via email (as have others), and he is willing to make the links available once again. They appear to be working now. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 15:40, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Has added spam promoting a replica Princess Diana engagment ring [15], moth repellent [16], and a calendar commerating the 2003 California recall election [17]. All links inserted direct to the same website. My reversion of their spamming has now decended into acrimony, with the user insulting me. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 16:52, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two google searches suggest this may be a WP:COI issue (circumstantial, but suggests a link). The "recall election" dif (above) references the name "Matthew Kashani". By first googling "cryellow" turns up a personal homepage: http://members.cox.net/cryellow/ which shows at the bottom three company links under "My Favorite Places". A second google search for "Matthew Kashani" turns up all thee companies listing that person as founder or CEO of all three companies.
URLs
It's not solid proof, and I will not pursue it further myself - but it is suggestive of a COI issue related to self-promotion and attempting to use Wikipedia for marketing/advertising purposes. --12.193.27.158 (talk) 18:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One last comment: while the user insists on his talk page that he's not associated with the company, he has twice edited out the last name from where the OP asked him if he's "Matthew Kashani". Odd behavior to be trying to hide the last name if it's not really you - especially when Cryellow posted the full name in an article himself earlier. --12.193.27.158 (talk) 18:47, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It really makes no difference if the editor persistently adding these links is Matthew Kashani, The Mighty Quinn or the Easter Bunny. The point is that Wikipedia is not a soapbox for promoting products and if this spamming continues, these domains will be blacklisted, regardless of the person's identity off-Wikipedia. Any accompanying acrimony on the spammer's part will just accelerate that outcome.
--A. B. (talkcontribs) 05:30, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: Looking at the edits by those involved, I see no posts of the "FISSATO" or "HableyMedical" links. The association to this thread appears to be solely on their inclusion on a homepage of someone off Wikipedia who has the name "Cryellow", who we have no verification is the person with that username on the wiki. If/when action needs to be taken, I recommend leaving out those two links for now. In fact, I'm tempted to just remove them from this report entirely as they haven't been used on the wiki from what I can see. Opinions? --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 14:00, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please look into the links to modelsobserver.com? I came across this site when it was repeatedly added to Bodybuilding supplement. It has been added to many other articles by various IP addresses. In some cases, removal of the link by other editors has resulted in fairly aggressive re-addition (see this example). I think the site has limited usefulness to the articles it is linked from, but I'd like a second opinion. Deli nk (talk) 19:05, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Our spammer gets quite testy in his edit summaries when his links are questioned or deleted.
This domain needs blacklisting on the meta blacklist at meta:Talk:Spam blacklist. I'm an admin on Meta and I'll be happy to handle this on meta tomorrow but I don't have any more time to work on this today. Can someone first remove these links before blacklisting? Thanks!

Possible rename

There is an increasing issue with sites that are justly blacklisted due to abuse, but which complain to OTRS that when searching for their site the link abuse pages we generate score very highly. We have already discussed several times the possibility of renaming the MediaWiki spam blacklist pages to link blacklist, and that may or may not be done, but we could lessen the complaints and be seen to do the Right Thing by renaming this project to something like "WikiProject external links" or "WikiProject link management". I submit this for your consideration. Guy (Help!) 15:50, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If they abuse wikipedia they deserve to have our pages show up in the results. Spam is spam there is no need to create some weird new term that means the same thing. Call a spade a spade. βcommand 2 16:06, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do feel for OTRS, as I'm sure the majority of the spam complaints recieved are just another avenue for these spammers to attempt to exploit Wikipedia. Ive asked this Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam/2008_Archive_Mar_2#When_does_a_Wikiproject.2C_become_a_noticeboard previously, without response. WikiProject Spam should remain, however "MediaWiki spam blacklist" might be better suited without the term "spam", as it has potential for other non-spam applications. Ironicly the spammers did use wikipedia in order to score "high" in google, let them enjoy the spoils of their efforts. ;)--Hu12 (talk) 16:39, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Plus, in a lot of cases, it isn't actually provably them, just J. Random Editor. And sites may be blacklisted as massively inappropriate, rather than simple spam. Guy (Help!) 18:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
• I am still saying, if the edits were in good faith, and they stopped directly when warned, then go forward and delete the reports, drop me (or another operator of COIBot, here is also a good venue) a line to remove the rule(s) from the bot, and get on. If the edits were persistent, and warnings and discussions have not helped, then the reports are an on-wiki proof of why the link was blacklisted/added to a revertlist, or is in other way of concern. The wikipedia system gives handful of warnings when they edit (even I as an admin see "Content that violates any copyright will be deleted. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable. You agree to license your contributions under the GFDL.", "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed for profit by others, do not submit it.", "See our policies and guidelines for more information on editing." around this edit window; when creating a new article I see "Before creating an article, please read Wikipedia:Your first article, or search for an existing article to which you can redirect this title." (with a link to Wikipedia:Your first article, saying "Please don't create pages about yourself or your friends, pages that advertise, or personal essays.", and there is a section on advertising; when adding links you run into captchas, etc. etc. I know, we don't have to punish people for their actions, but also don't have to help in obfuscating their negative tracks, we are not an advertising service. Getting the reports out of the top ten can also be done by making sure your company is known in a positive way. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:10, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My 2 pence:
1. Our goal is to maintain the encyclopedia's integrity, not maintain a linkspam-identification project for the rest of the world.
2. If we can reduce the load on OTRS volunteers while still meeting our goal, I'm all for it.
3. Not every domain reported here is found to be spam
4. Yes, some side of me enjoys watching spammers squirm, but I have to remind myself this is all about an encyclopaedia, not indulging my childish feelings of schadenfreude (and they can be very strong some days!). It's probably in our encyclopaedia's best interests to do our job in a quiet, low-profile, efficient way with as little drama as possible.
5. I especially would like to see us rename some of the bot-generated subpages of this project such as:
By their very nature, these valuable reports generate a lot of false positives which then create consternation for innocent editors and domain-owners that appear on these pages.
--A. B. (talkcontribs) 18:07, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, false positives and marginal cases, and links added by some other person, and the occasional joe job. WP:AGF and all that: we should deal with the problem (excessive link abuse) while remaining neutral on the motives. Guy (Help!) 18:44, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On the topic: Ragnarok Online is an online role-playing game (MMORPG), run on multiple localized servers world wide by a Korean company named Gravity, its subsidiaries, or other companies who acquired a license from the mentioned company. The game is also known for its enourmous community surrounding illegal private servers (usually run on emulated or stolen server software). There are literally hundreds or thousands of these servers. The official servers are listed on ragnarokonline.com.

This IP keeps advertising one of these private servers - most likely one that he runs, plays on, or is otherwise related with.

Camuco (talk · contribs) has been busily spamming http://www.purecountrymusic.com on various country singer articles, including Alan Jackson, Alabama (band), The Bellamy Brothers, and so forth. This user keep adding their own (Turkish) forum to the 'popular fan sites' section of the page. I've removed it several times so far, but I haven't used reverts for that (mainly because his adding them involved more than one edit), so I'm not sure if this is in violation of the 3RR rule, but it starts to get annoying. Zyppora (talk) 14:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see, there's no comments about it on the article's talk page, and no posts on the user's talk page. As a first step, I would suggest starting a discussion on the article's talk page about it. If the user continues, post on their talk page to get involved with the discussion.
As a general rule, any fansite that is nothing more than a discussion forum should probably not be listed per WP:ELNO. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 14:55, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
