Hi! My name is Zoltán Szőke. I work for the National Archives of Hungary (former ICCS member state!!!). I wrote my M.A. thesis on the ICCS (dealing mainly with the "controversial" role of the Hungarian delegation...) According to tens of thousands of primary archival sources there was an "of" in the commission’s name instead of a "for". It should be changed in the title of the article, too. I just couldn’t find out how. I'll be back later with more.

Image:Paris.louvre.pyramid.750pix.jpg

Hello ! Regarding the photograph Image:Paris.louvre.pyramid.750pix.jpg, I fear that things are a little bit more complicated that one would think intuitively. You can take the photograph, of course, but in French law the pyramid is considered a work of art whose author's rights belongs to the architect. Mr Pei actually already successfully sued people for such reasons. See the debate at [1]. Similar things happened regarding the illumination of the Eiffel Tower.

This being said, stay assured that I deplore this particular law, and that I have a high appreciation for your contributions on Wikipedia. Rama 13:45, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To avoid problems consider a reupload under a different name without pyramid. Replace old image in articles with new one then mark old image for deletion. Maybe avoid the 750x (or similar) in image names, sometimes led to confusion. --Denniss 18:55, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Denniss, for your ideas. The pic in the Louvre Museum gallery called Image:paris.louvre.pyramid.750pix.jpg has been replaced by Image:louvre.courtyard.paris.arp.jpg. The picture has been sharpened, deslanted, upped from 750pix wide to 1800 pix wide and put to Commons. Any mention of the pyramid has been removed from the Image Description Page and the article picture caption. I have retained my PD copyright notice but would not object to a change to some other copyright notice.
Should my rants under the old picture die when it is deleted or should the talk stuff be copied over to the new images IDP? I assume we don't want any mentions of the pyramid left around so I would like to see that stuff die with the picture. I have no idea of deletion procedures so can someone please do that for me?
I notice there is a stub called Louvre Pyramid so I've changed the pic name there as well.
Special thanks to Rama for tolerating my outbursts on this subject - Adrian Pingstone 20:42, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adrian My name is Helen and I work for Bosch in the UK. I would like to use your London.Eye.many.capsules picture. I would like to use it in a presentation about Bosch Rexroth, the company who produced all the drive hydraulics and suspension technology. The picture will be seen on a plasma screens in Heathrow airport. I have read the copyright blurb and it looks like there is no legal restriction on use. Since this is for use in a public arena, can you confirm that I can use this for Bosch, without being sued!! Cheers Love the picture. Helen

Hi Helen! The good news is that any pic of mine (and I've got about 1500 of them on Wikipedia) labelled as Public Domain (which is most of them) is yours to modify in any way whatsoever to suit your presentation. You can show them in public, publish them, etc etc. and there's no possibility of legal come back because by declaring them Public Domain I have relinquished all rights. Theoretically you didn't even need to ask me but I'm glad that you did. I am flattered you wish to use my pics so thanks again. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 16:28, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, Apologies for showing myself up and thanks for being so gracious about it! Thanks for the confirmation. Go to Terminal 1, Heathrow departures from Jan 10th onwards to see Rexroth presentation on plasma screens - featuring your image! Cheers Adrian. Regards, Helen.

Varve

Re: your edits of the article varve. Technically varves do fall within the 'calendar band of orbitally forced cyclicity'. I'm happy to leave it out because on reflection it doesn't add much worthwhile to the article at the moment. But it's not 'nonsense' and I'd be interested to hear why you think it is... NickW 11:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've also reinserted the term 'teleconnections'. Not sure why you've taken this one out twice now. If you'd like some references so you can check the literature just let me know. NickW 11:19, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas!

Dear Adrian: Hi! How are you? Long time no talk! Merry Christmas!

As you can see, I finally uploaded the Menudo cd photo I always wanted. This was very important, because, most people don't realize Menudo's most famous era was actually pre-Ricky Martin, it was when this CD, Quiero Ser, was released.

Anyways, I just wanted to say hi and Merry Christmas! God bless you!

Sincerely yours, your wiki-friend Antonio No Logic Martin

Southern.pinwheel.arp.750pix.jpg

Hi Adrian - I understand that you uploaded this image. I regret to say I have just nominated it for deletion on ground that wikipedia is apparently not supposed to carry images restricted to non-commercial use. I now regret doing this as I have little understanding of the issues. I wasn't thinking. See: Wikipedia_talk:Image_use_policy/Noncommercial-use for some of the arguments. --Sf 14:58, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, I understand very little on the complexity of copyright either. So whether it's deleted or kept won't bother me. Just do as you think best and I'll be happy. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 15:09, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've noted my regret/reservations on the nominations for deletions page. I was simply doing a trawl of images checking for trashed licence information at the time. Have a nice christmas. --Sf 15:28, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

De Havilland link on Sea Vixen Page

Hi,

I notice that you changed the link on the Sea Vixen article page from "De Havilland Aviation Ltd" to "de Havilland..." (i.e. small 'd'). I've changed it back as I'm not happy about anyone changing the name of a company of which I am an executive director and, therefore, know precisely how the company is titled.
If we choose to adopt a change of company title, now that we've taken over the company, then we will do so, and we will be the ones to notify any official changes of corporate name.
In the meantime, De Havilland Aviation Ltd is spelt with a capital 'D'.
Thank you.

There is absolutely no need to write so curtly. We have a happy community here at WP and your manner of writing is quite different to how anyone has written before (except for the weird person who wrote in all capitals further up this page). I worked for BAe for 36 years but had no connections with your De Havilland so I genuinely did not know "precisely how the company is titled". I thought it was de Havilland as of old (surely a very understandable mistake that many people must make!) How nice it would have been if your note had read like this - Adrian, I don't think you realised that the new DH company now uses a capital on the "de" part. I appreciate that you did not realise this in view of the old lack of capitalisation on the "de" but would very much appreciate it if you used the capital when writing about my company in the future, Thanks. See what I mean! - Adrian Pingstone 21:53, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Also: reference Thanks/wangi 22:16, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That's all very noble and all that, but on an equal footing, would it not have been equally polite to have emailed first asking the correct syntax before just going in an abitrarily removing a valid reference and external link? Anyone can easily go in and just remove or change an entry, but a reason for such, or an editing note to the original author would be just as politically correct. Having gone through a great deal of negotiation and trademarking of company names and marks, it likewise grates somewhat to have changes made without prior consultation with the company that operates the actual aircraft.
You are talking to the wrong person. I had absolutely nothing whatever to do with the removal of the De Havilland link and I agree with you that a note to you from Wangi explaining the intended removal would have been good. I'm glad to see the (entirely relevant) link is back. My only gripe with you was the tone of your message to me.
Incidentally, it would be good if you signed and dated your messages, just type four tildes (on my keyboard it's the wavy thing above the hash key). - Adrian Pingstone 15:29, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tarom pics

Ok Adrian I'm sorry for adding pics that aren't not mine. I promise that I will make a picture by myself of an Tarom A and I will add it. NorbertArthur 28 December 2005

Thanks for your apology, all is forgiven, Best Wishes, - Adrian Pingstone 20:40, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I thank you very much for accepting my apologies, Adrian! I have a question about a pic that I added at Tarom. That photo is made by yourself, so do I'm allowed to put there? If isn't right, please take it off.
Regards, NorbertArthur 28 December 2005
I'm pleased you used my pic off Commons (I assume you found it on Commons) because that is exactly what Commons is for (a source of pics for WP). You can add any pic off Commons without seeking permission of the uploader so next time you want to use a pic just go ahead and use it. It isn't me Adrian who put that pic there, I swear! Please believe me because I gave my password to a friend and that stupid is now writing on my username! I don't know what to do!

Tarom illegal pics

Ok Adrian you can delete the pic on Tarom page! I talked with that idiot that was writing on my username and he swore me that he never gonna put again pics there. That pic isn't even well piratated, because it is wrote that the photo was made in December 2005 and after it is said that tha aircraft is in storage. I thank you a lot for spending time for that pic and for caring of the illegal pics and I'm really, really sorry for giving my password to otherone and if you have time, please explain me what kind of images I'm allow to add! Thank you

Thank you for your many excellent images! Regarding this: Image:Typhoon.t1.zj807.arp.jpg, I notice the rudders of both Typhoon's seem to be fully extended in one direction. Any idea if this is part of the taxying or parking procedure (if there is such a procedure), which also folds the canards? Mark83 23:06, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mourne Mountains FPC

Adrian, I read your comment regarding the sloping of the image. It isn't something I thought to check but when you pointed it out it was so obvious! I've uploaded a straightened version.

Thanks for getting back to me regarding the query above. I've noticed more images of Typhoons with the rudders like that, it must be a procedure. I know what you mean about it being a nuisance photographically, when I first saw it I thought the RAF might be testing a different shade of paint on the rudder that was incredibly effective at camoflauging! Turned legal

Hello Adrian. I've gone legal. I found a picture of a Libyan jet on airliners.net and I contacted the photographer. I asked him if he would be interested in uploading the image onto Wikipedia Commons and he was more than happy. Check out the cool pic on Libyan Arab Airlines. Jaw101ie 14:29, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great, but did he actually declare it Public Domain, which is what the Image Description Page says he has released it as? This means that anyone can use it, alter it in any way or make profits from it by publishing it in, say, a book (all without having to credit the photographer). (By the way, please use four tildes like this ~~~~ at the end of your messages then I'll be able immediately to see who you are and the date and time you left the message) - Adrian Pingstone 18:21, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Picture caption in Hotel

I feel rather sheepish leaving a note about (or doing, for that matter) a one-word revert, but I think the original picture caption is the right one, since the hotel (and head office of the chain) are in the US, the US word "upscale" should be used rather than "upmarket", which is a Britishism not used in the US. Needless to say I don't go around in general changing UK usage or spelling to US usage or spelling, or vice versa, but my understanding is that the consensus is to use UK usage/spelling in articles or references to the UK and US usage/spelling in articles or references to the US. The "useable" CC sites all have something like "The Crown copyright protected material may be reproduced free of charge in any format or media without requiring specific permission." I accept what you say so please delete the pic. Regards, Adrian - Adrian Pingstone 15:42, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grob picture

Adrian, I agree that there is a need for more pictures in the Glider article but another picture of the same type of aircraft doesn't illustrate anything extra. I think the Falke picture is clearer and as a mid-air shot, it is more interesting. (I didn't take it incidentally.) It may be better to show an open class or a world class glider because these could illustrate differences between glider classes. There is an article on Touring Motor Gliders where the differences between a Falke and a Grob might be discussed and illustrated with picures. I hope you agree. JMcC 18:45, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't agree at all. In my view if an article has plenty of remaining space for pictures then it is good to provide them, even if they are a little the same. Visually the Grob has no resemblance at all to the Falke so the reader looking for a pic might want to look at the Falke or might want to look at the Grob. Is it for us to decide that! WP is not only text but also a picture source for our readers so, if they don't like a particular pic or it doesn't suit their purpose then they can choose another. At least they have the choice. So I would be very unhappy if you took my pic away (I have nil connection with the glider world, by the way). I think the problem here lies in that I'm thinking of the readers pleasure and choice and you're thinking technically ie we should not repeat a glider type in the pictures. If you do take it away I won't revert, life's too short to play the reversion game. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 09:45, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Olympus cameras and Albury Railway station picture

Thanks for your comments about my picture. I feel very nervous about exposing myself to this sort of process but I did think it showed what Italianate architecture was about. I notice from your user page you too have an Olympus camera. Mine is a C740UZ - yours is presumably a slightly later model in the same series. We bought ours in 2003 - I find the 10* zoom brilliant and the AA batteries very useful - when you are in Condobolin (the middle of New South Wales) and you forgot to recharge the night before and want to click away the next day - any garage will supply the necessaries!:-) Regards--A Y Arktos 20:39, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for writing, I very much liked your picture (don't be nervous, it's all for fun!). I've noticed that pictures don't usually succeeed at becoming Featured if they show only part of a building, however yours illustrates its article beautifully.
My camera is an Olympus C750UZ, I don't know the differences to yours. I too love the 10 times zoom because I especially enjoy aircraft photography so it's essential for that but I would like a faster shutter speed than my max of one thousandth of a second.
The AA batteries are a great feature, they are cheap here (about 12 English pounds (22 Australian dollars)for a pack of 4) and very easily available of course. I use rechargeables but keep a pack of ordinary AA in case they run out. I get at least 500 pics before the batteries run out and yesterday I took 200 flash pictures in Bristol Museum and still the batteries were OK! I use a 512K Xd card (£22English, 50 Australian Dollars, ordered off the internet) which gives me 520 pics at the quality I use (which is high quality JPG at 2288 by 1712 pixels). I've illustrated around 450 of the aircraft/airline/airliner articles, mostly with the C750. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 09:39, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jaguar.x-type.arp.jpg

Hello Arpingstone! I am new to wikipedia and I currently try to enhance the german wikipedia with an article concerning Jaguar X-Type. I would like to use your photograph in this article, but it seems that I can only link to photographs on Commons.wikipedia.org or on de.wikipedia.org. So my question: Would you mind moving your photograph to Commons? Thank you, --De Nucleolus 12:59, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nucleolus! No problem, the photo is now on Commons at 1758 by 1211 pixels and 227K big. I've put it at article "Jaguar X-TYPE" (the capitals are not an error, the cars themselves and the Jaguar website use capitals). You'll find the article at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_X-TYPE.

Thank you very much! I could already link to your photo and I will add a referral link to your photos commons page tomorrow! Best wishes, too --De Nucleolus 21:38, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol zoo pics & chew valley

Hi,

You seem to have added several pics to the Bristol Zoo page. I've added a few more that I took today, not as good as yours - could you take a look & see if you think they are good enough to stay or should be deleted?

Also I see you are near Bristol - could you take a look at the Chew Valley Lake page which I've put up for featured article candidate & if you had any pics to add to that or others in the Chew Valley I'd be really grateful. Rod 20:23, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rod! Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the Chew area.
I've looked at your zoo pics and (assuming you want me to be absolutely honest) only two of them are OK to stay. The OK ones are the Stag Beetles (although it needs lightening and the format changed so that the pole on the left is gone). The flamingo pic is a good one. The Asiatic lion pic is way too dim, the Red panda is too distant (have you a zoom on your camera, I've got times 10), the pygmy hippo is too distant as well. I'll upload my Lion, Panda and Hippo, put them on the gallery and then you will better understand why your pics are not really up to WP standard (yet!) Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - Adrian Pingstone 21:32, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks valid coments & thats why I asked you - my photography is sort of point & clck & mostlyof the kids (which obviously I don't upload here) If you fancied tripping out to the valley to do any illustrations for any of the villages etc that would be great - in the meantime Ill carry on trying to do some myself. Rod 22:04, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking the bad news so well. As I promised above I've uploaded another lion (the male), the Red Panda and the Pygmy Hippo to the gallery at Bristol Zoo. You can see the sort of job my digital Olympus C750UZ (no longer on the market) can do. The best part of the camera is the x10 zoom, that's how I get these closeups - Adrian Pingstone 22:25, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstars

I've created my very own barnstar. Am I allowed to give this to people I think deservant of it? Jaw101ie 21:59, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Giving Barnstars is nice, I've been awarded two at the moment. If you go to User:Arpingstone and then click on the pic of the blackish star you'll see a list of some of the existing Barnstars. You can award one to anyone you want to (or more than one person). Usually the reason for giving the Star is stated, like Great Editing, Great Photography or whatever. What does the (Arabic?) in the middle mean? Best Wishes, Adrian - Adrian Pingstone 22:18, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It says "Wikepedia-Libya" in Arabic, but my question is still, am I allowed to give this barnstar that I have created to other people? Jaw101ie 22:26, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please read my reply again, it clearly says you can award one to anyone you want to (or more than one person) - Adrian Pingstone 22:37, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image copyright problem with Image:Vampire.rcaf.arp.750pix.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Vampire.rcaf.arp.750pix.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you have questions about copyright tagging of images, post on Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags or User talk:Carnildo/images. 22:24, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I've had a look at the RCAF site and it seems that their pics are not for commercial use, so please delete - Adrian Pingstone 20:39, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Bald Eagle image

I just wanted to drop by and thank you and wikipedia for the use of this beautiful photo of a bald eagle. Look for it on my Good News Network site in a couple weeks (it is about to go live with new cms/blog/php software) accompanying a story called, Bald Eagle Numbers Soar (in USA) ... From 400 pairs of birds some decades ago to more than 7000 pairs today. Thanks for the wonderful photo to enhance the telling of this REALLY Good News story. Oh, I'm going to attribute you as the photographer as well. (hope I used your 'talk page' correctly.) 23:07, 23 February 2006 G00dnews 23:12, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Geri Weis-Corbley, publisher[reply]

It was kind of you to write to me, thanks. Two very small points you might like to know if you contribute to a Talk page again: firstly your typing on a Talk Page should go at the bottom of the Talk page. Secondly, so that I can know which pic you were referring to type the pictures name in this format: Image:bald.eagle.closeup.arp-sh.750pix.jpg and it appears as a clickable link. Thanks again for writing - Adrian Pingstone 20:39, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Libya Images

Hi, I've spent ages looking for Creative Commons Images on the internet to put in the Libya page. I was very lucky to find many. Please check the page and tell me if the tags are all o.k. We both know i've had a problem with copyright before but I hope these one's are o.k.

Sorry to seem unco-operative but since I don't know what sort of permission those photographers gave you nor where you found them on the net I can't comment. Sorry about that - Adrian Pingstone 09:11, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was under the impression that I didn't need their permission. Because the photographers released their work under a Creative Commons License, they agree to allow their work to be used and shared, sometimes even for commercial purposes without anybody needing to get their permission. I have, however, stated the photographers names and chosen the correct Creative Commons License for each piece, (I was also under the impression that I had to state EITHER the authour OR the url, which I've done). Should I do anything else to ensure these LEGAL images are not deleted, or are they o.k ? Jaw101ie 12:35, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I didn't mean you had to get direct permission from the photographer, I was using the word permission loosely, to mean the License. Even so I repeat that it's impossible for me to know if you have interpreted the license conditions correctly because I don't have the URLs to check the photographers requirements for myself. In any case, I don't have time to do that check.
Even worse I know nothing about Licenses because all my pics are off my own camera so they are simply Public Domain which is the simplest of all licenses (in fact, it's no license at all!).
You definitely should give the URL so that other Wikipedians can check the License allows WP to use the pic. The photographers name is not sufficient because tracking down your pic on the internet would be difficult or impossible from only the name. I hope something of this helps a little - Adrian Pingstone 19:31, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Bank of England

Hi Adrian, I would like to use your image of the Bank of England in a web site. Is there any way to get a higher-res version of the picture from you? The picture in question is http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/83/Bank.of.england.arp.750pix.jpg

If it is at all possible I would love to get it! Many thanks, and contact me via aanton22 AT student DOT scad DOT edu

Hi from Adrian. I have uploaded the identical pic, but this time at hi-res, onto the Bank of England article. Just go there by clicking on that link I've just given, then click on the pic, then click on the "Download High Res Version" link, then right click and choose "Save Picture As". The "new" pic is 2288 by 1712 pixels and 781K big.
By the way, it's not a good idea to give your email address so freely, spam harvesters will love you! So you can see I have modified it. In any case I don't need it because I always reply to questions right here.
For my interest, what is the web site, and what country are you in? A final point you wouldn't have known - new talk goes at the bottom of a Talk Page not the top. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 19:16, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for simplifying a lot of the language in paper wasp, but it would be nice if you could find some way to rephrase the information you deleted instead of just deleting it. After all, the more information, the better... perhaps it could be relegated to a more technical subsection? — flamingspinach | (talk) 19:50, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment but I disagree. The stuff I removed was too technical (in my opinion, of course) to go anywhere on WP, even in a subsection or another article. However that's only my opinion and I may be wrong. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 21:29, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I asked some admins on #wikipedia what they thought, and they said it's not advisable to delete content just because it's abstruse. Rather, try using the {{technical}} template, or fixing it up yourself. Also note that the first of the Five Pillars of Wikipedia is "Wikipedia is an encyclopedia incorporating elements of general encyclopedias, specialized encyclopedias, and almanacs." I'll add back in the stuff you deleted, if you don't mind... — flamingspinach | (talk) 06:12, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, my mistake, I'm happy for the stuff to go back in - Adrian Pingstone 10:24, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Arp. I'm baffled. Your Nicobar Pigeon image is fine on that page, but two of us have failed to get it to show on dove - there's another image on the same page that won't show too. Any ideas? jimfbleak 06:33, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim.Yes, I can fix it but only at the expense of having no links in the pic captions of Mourning Dove and Nicobar Pigeon on the Dove page . I have no idea why that works, it's completely baffling! Of course, someone will come along, re-link those two captions and we'll be back where we were. Never seen anything so weird but of course the explanation will be simple! Ford Cortina picture

Hi Adrian.Im trying to write a message to yourself.I know this is probably the wrong place to write it but i cant find anywhere else.I beleive i need training on wp (lol).Just wanted to congratulate you on the stunning picture of the cortina crusader but then realised i couldnt find a place to write.Ill leave my e-mail adress for wp training lessons (lol). If you could delete this and then replace it in the correct section it would be apreciated. And any help on how to carry this out would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou. Steve Johnson (jlexv8 AT msn DOT com)

Hi Steve, welcome to Wikipedia! You put your message in exactly the right place (my personal Talk Page). One hint: don't give your email address on WP, spam programs could collect that address and you might get a flood of rubbish emails for ever more. Notice I've changed . to DOT (and @ to AT), spam harvesters then can't read your address but people can. It's better to not give your address at all and do any conversation on personal Talk Pages or on the article's Talk Page (every article has one).
Thanks for your nice comments on my Ford Cortina pic which I presume is Image:Cortina.mk4.750pix.jpg. If you go into Edit on this message you will see that if double square brackets are put around a WP article name (like this: [[Ford Cortina]]) then it becomes a blue link. Similarly a pic can be linked to by typing [[:image:Cortina.mk4.750pix.jpg]]. That means you you can click on the blue link and go straight to that article or picture. Try it, just click on that blue-coloured cortina.mk4.759pix.jpg above and you'll see. Get back here with the Backspace key on your keyboard.
Finally, if you register a username with WP then you could have added your username and the time and day by simply typing four tildes (that wavy symbol, which on my keyboard is above the Hash key). Unfortunately, no time for any more WP lessons, I'm too busy adding pics to WP (about 1500 so far , since January 2003) Best Wishes, Adrian - Adrian Pingstone 09:33, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

I noticed you have a fare share of pictures on Wikipedia (for instance Image:Clown.fish.arp.750pix.jpg which I decided was good enough to go on my userpage twice). I'm putting together Marine life portal and Marine life Wikiproject, and was wondering if you have any more fish/coral type pictures? There's dozens of pages of very common marine fish you could find in pet shops/zoos/public aquariums ect. without a picture that could be greatly improved. Any help would be great. Your user name

Hello. I hope you don't think me impertinent, but I am curious. Since you reveal your real name Adrian Pingstone on your messages anyway, what was the purpose of creating the different user name "Arpingstone"? Cheers JackofOz 01:06, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your question is welcome! I agree it seems odd but the answer is simple. My username is indeed Arpingstone. I used that for a while when signing Talk stuff then I thought that it would be much friendlier if my proper name appeared when I type the four tildes (it seemed nicer if people knew I was Adrian). So I have put Adrian Pingstone in my Prefs to make it appear (instead of Arpingstone) when I sign something. (Did you know you could do that?) Incidentally, the surname is a corruption of a town name in Derbyshire, here in England, called Pinxton. Pinxton has been slowly corrupted to Pingstone since 1350 AD when the town name was first recorded as a surname. Best - Adrian Pingstone 09:08, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, Adrian. Most enlightening. JackofOz 23:27, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Hi Arpingstone,

My name is Fernanda Viégas and I have been studying Wikipedia for a while now (you can see a paper I published on the subject here). I would like to ask you a few questions about your activities as a Wikipedia photographer. I am fascinated by the pictorial side of Wikipedia and it would be great to hear about this community from one of its members. Would you be available for an email interview? Thanks, Fernanda.

Yes, that will be OK. I'll be hearing from you? - Adrian Pingstone 22:05, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mr. Pingstone. I'm contacting you because you're my last chance. I will begin with the beggining. On the article about Romanians, we (many of the Romanian users) had a negotiation in month of January, you can look on the talk page, when we decided to leave the article like that: we put the official figures of the Romanian diaspora and we add and estimation, surely with the source. All was Ok, until in late March the user:Jayig came there and began big modifications, that of course were not true. When I tried to revert his edits to the original version, I was blocked by the administrator user:SlimVirgin for "vandalism", although I was just reverting the true there. Jayig received the sources of our figures, but when he saw that there're true, he deleted all of them, including those of USA, Canada, Italy and Spain. Now I can't write the estimations because I don't have the sources of my informations, 'cause Jayig removed them. He puted there impossible figures from his sites, and do not listen to what the other says, it's good just what he writes. Please find time and solve this problem, because the entire firgures are just lies. Thank you a lot ! Regards, NorbertArthur 2 April 2006

I'm very sorry but I can't get involved. One more person interfering would be unlikely to help. Your problem has to be solved by the goodwill of yourself and those you talking with - Adrian Pingstone 16:21, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much and let's hope the problem will be solved.

The arkive incident

The Anon's (195.188.139.172 (talkcontribs)) edits so far have consisted only of adding arkive links to well over 200 pages, and he had received a warning about it back in March. When I found the links on Biodiversity, and Benedict Allen, I decided to go all out. If the site is indeed a good source, I will personally fix the links, though. Circeus 22:32, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like User:UtherSRG and User:Janderk reverted most of it. I undid the leftover, with the exception of articles that were not about species (such as, ironically, species, Spider and List of extinct animals). Sorry about the mess. guess I'llleave such things to other, more experienced users next time (it being actually the reason I rarely revert link addition on te few music pages I watch, unless I've seen them reverted before.) ATR

I noticed you took/uploaded some pictures of ATR aircraft. Well, the article has been merged with ATR 42 and the pictures from both pages have been combined (with the exception of one which A. Would not fit and B. Had copyright issues)...but I'm not sure as to whether or not you were the one who had uploaded it. Thanks! --EMC 00:29, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Libyan Arab Airlines

I'm really angry! The image of the Libyan A320 uploaded by the photographer Thierry Deutsch, Image:TsinjHLLT020106.jpg, is going to be deleted. I asked permission for him to upload the image and he agreed. He uploadedit himself with his user account and released it under GFDL. Why is it being deleted. I assure you it is LEGAL! Please help, Jaw101ie 19:19, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before the tag that is currently on the page was put there, there was a GFDL tag. I asked Thierry to write Libyan Arab airlines bla bla bla... released to the public domain. I thought that putting a GFDL tag and writing "photo released to the public domain" was synonomous. I presume the answer to your question is that the previous tag was GFDL like Image:Leptis Magna market place April 2004.jpg. Jaw101ie 22:28, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be stupid

It's very terrible how you make worse the articles created by many users. You always have to look at each article if all the pictures are copyrighted. Come on. Don't play the copyright guard. Do you know that you are very selfish. You come with some stupid excuses that a picture is not copyrighted (sometimes you are right) but then you take the opportunity making an article worse. I'm not speaking for myself. I'm speaking for the rights of every user. Do you know that it´s our passion to improve articles day for day. Do you know that it's very difficult making an own picture for example like for a plane. So it's correctly if everybody uses the internet to get some pictures although the majority of this pictures are not copyrighted. So I recommend you Pingstone. SHUT UP!!!

You should learn a "little" about copyright. If you are able to read and understand then upload free images or leave wikipedia. Constantly uploading images stolen from other websites and claiming authorship will result in a ban. --Denniss 12:57, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Youssef90, thank you for your interesting contribution to my User Talk. It is also my passion to "improve articles day by day". However some methods of improving articles are acceptable to Wikipedia and some are not. If we use Airliners.net copyright pictures then it is possible that Wikipedia could be brought to the Courts and fined for violating copyright law. So you must understand that Copyright pics CANNOT be stolen from their owners (who are the original photographers) and put on to WP with a false Public Domain statement. I assume you are an intelligent person in which case you will understand what I am saying. Your contributions are valued by WP but they must be within the rules of WP. Please note that I have NEVER removed a pic that is legally on WP, please let me know if you can find one.(Denniss, thank you for your support) Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 17:15, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice

Dear Adrian, just to let you know that I found that the three pictures merged into one of the Austrian cable car are truly amusing! Thank you! E. Cortez.

You're welcome. I forgot to tell you that your picture made me feel like I should learn some Photoshop skills, to learn something new and as a way to relax creating such cool images. :) So, I started looking for Photoshop material on the web and I found some amazing websites. This is the one that impressed me the most: http://www.worth1000.com. If you don't know it yet, what I can tell about this website so far is that it has a huge database of all kinds of Photoshop modified pictures, looks like we don't have to pay to register (but I didn't do it anyway) and, despite all the pictures might be copyrighted, they still allow us to see them on the screen in good size, as it might be a great souce of inspiration and amusement. Enjoy! E. Cortez.

edit summaries

Please, Mr Arpingstone add more informative edit summaries, because, when you edited Aerolineas Argentinas, the following summary:

Can't be considered descriptive at all --Argentino (talk/cont.) 17:28, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. Yes, I should give a better summary if I've done just one edit but often I might do 5 or 10 edits to one article and thern it's impossible.
So I normally use just the the word Edit no matter how many edits I do and you can very easily find what they were by clicking on Diff when the article comes up on your Watchlist. However, I will be more descriptive if I do only a few edits but I'll still type Edits if there's lots. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 18:20, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Giving credit

Hello Arpingstone,

I just downloaded a copy of your insect in amber pic, intending to use it on a page of mine. I thought I should give you at least a link for it or a "photo by Arpingstone"-text, so I wonder if you have a favourite solution for this kind of situation. (As I understand it I don't have to, but it seems like the nicest thing to do (or at least A nice thing to do :) ).) Thanks, Per (yet another wiki-lover).

Thanks for thinking to give me credit on your page. You are right, you don't have to give credit for a public domain photo but it's a nice thing to do. There's no agreed format for the message so I suggest you simply say "Photograph taken by Adrian Pingstone" and that's all you need . Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 21:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please be more careful

'Improving style' is all very well and good, but removing stuff is more dangerous and/or marking it as a 'joke' (Avro Vulcan); when multiple sources all say it did in fact occur is *not*. I also had reason to be concerned about some of the edits you made to the concorde entry (2/3 were fine though). Accuracy is pretty important, if really you don't care about accuracy you shouldn't be contributing to the wikipedia at all. Some of your style edits seem to change the meaning of what is written. Sometimes that makes no difference, but some of them seem pretty dubious to me. For example you edited the Salcombe entry to remove the reference to ice cream. AFAIK that is one of the things that Salcombe is particularly known for, so I'm unclear you've improved the piece; you've just deleted stuff from an already short article. Is that really any better? It seems to me you've made the article significantly worse.
Just be more careful OK?WolfKeeper 20:45, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from Adrian. Thanks for your interesting message with which I very strongly disagree so here are my comments (at length because such an unpleasant talk entry must be answered properly):
1. In the Avro Vulcan article, under the Malta accident entry, I was absolutely correct to remove the line “Vincenza Zammitt, 48, who was shopping in a street……” It’s just padding in an article about the Avro Vulcan. But wasn’t it a bit trivial to write to me about it? Here’s the entry in full so that others may judge:
* On 14 October 1975 Vulcan B.2 XM645 of No.9 Squadron RAF Waddington lost its right undercarriage when it attempted to land at Luqa airport in Malta. The pilot decided to do a circuit to crash land on runway 24 after it was covered with fire prevention foam. As the aircraft was turning inbound for the landing, it exploded in mid-air over Zabbar village, killing 5 of its 7 crew members. Large pieces of the aircraft fell on the village, but with very low casualties—one woman (Vincenza Zammit, 48), who was shopping in a street was hit by an electric cable and was killed instantly, and some 20 others were injured slightly. Only the pilot and co-pilot escaped death by using their ejector seats (provided only for them).
2. Next here is the piece, in Avro Vulcan, about the photographer strapped to the plane :
  • Testing the brakes of the Vulcan included strapping the company photographer Paul Culerne to the front landing gear and doing an emergency stop.
Quite rightly I completely deleted that because it had no reference. Here is the same entry now:
No. That's very, very wrong. Few things in the wikipedia are referenced. The name of the company photographer was included, and you could have easily done a web search on it; you would have found it in several places. If you simply go around deleting stuff simply because it's not referenced the wikipedia will be practically empty. As your comment stated you just assumed (wrongly) that it was a joke and deleted it. You didn't check back through the history to find when it was inserted, you just deleted it. You made no attempt to google on it to check it's veracity, you just deleted it. There is no excuse for that vandalism. That is completely unacceptable.WolfKeeper 12:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
*Testing the brakes of the Vulcan included strapping the company photographer Paul Culerne to the front landing gear and doing an emergency stop.[1]
What has changed? See the difference? You have added a reference. Had you done that before I would not have deleted it!
I am very not impressed.WolfKeeper 12:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
3. On the Concorde changes I made, you give no examples so I have no comment. However you might like to know that I worked on Concorde at Filton for 12 years, went on 5 test flights of Concorde and was a Senior Aerodynamicist. So there’s just a chance that I know what I’m talking about.
Since you didn't actually add any aerodynamic information to the article that I could see, you actually subtracted information from the article, I see no particular reason to be impressed. I'd possibly have been impressed if you had added something.WolfKeeper 12:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
4. On Salcombe I think you show that it is you who can’t edit. No experienced editor would leave this nonsense in place:
The Town=
Salcombe is a classic seaside town, with some very good icecream, it has the second highest property prices (after Sandbanks, Poole) outside of central London in the UK.
It's a stub! Stubs have incomplete information in them otherwise they wouldn't be stub. You've actually made the stub even stubbier! What on earth were you thinking????WolfKeeper 12:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is a serious encyclopedia and the line about the icecream should not be there. What icecream, who makes it, why is Salcombe famous for it? Does it exist nowhere else? Then it might be OK to leave in.
Look it up and add it! Or leave it alone. It's a stub. Somebody who lives in the town may add it. If you remove it, they may not think to add it back in. They've got a high quality ice cream maker in the town that distributes to most of the southwest or something.WolfKeeper 12:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you can see now that your comments about me are wrong. I will continue to edit WP as I have been doing since January of 2003 - Adrian Pingstone 11:49, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Joy.WolfKeeper 12:39, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've read your replies above and would like to comment further:
FIRST, COMMENTS ON Salcombe:
AFAIK that is one of the things that Salcombe is particularly known for.
“As Far As I Know” means you’re guessing (WP does not do guessing).!!
They've got a high quality ice cream maker in the town that distributes to most of the southwest or something (the bold is mine)
So you’ve no idea about this “famous” icecream!
It's a stub! Stubs have incomplete information in them otherwise they wouldn't be stub. You've actually made the stub even stubbier! What on earth were you thinking????
I was thinking how peculiar it must sound to a reader in, say, New York, that Salcombe has a wonderful ice cream factory but with no further information. We can't just leave it there, no one may add to the sentence for years. Meanwhile it makes the article look amateur. Also I was thinking that if a stub has a bad or unsubstantiated piece of info in it, does that mean we leave it there so that the stub does not get stubbier. No, we don’t, we want a good encyclopedia now.
SECOND, COMMENTS ON Concorde:
Since you didn't actually add any aerodynamic information to the Concorde article that I could see, you actually subtracted information from the article, I see no particular reason to be impressed. I'd possibly have been impressed if you had added something.
Silly argument! Firstly I was trying to impress no-one and, secondly, you know perfectly well that I was editing for poor English and had no intention of adding anything to it.
I notice you have reverted most of my carefully thought out improvements to the Concorde article and returned to poorly phrased sentences. That’s sad! That’s all I have to say, this terminates my side of the discussion.

I'm sorry that this narrow-minded character is causing so much upset to your valuable edits. Your undoubted expertise is just as valuable when you trim or rewrite an article as it is when you add to it. It would be a shame to let the egotism of others interfere with your excellent work on Concorde (and thank you for your superb images - Westminster Cathedral comes to mind). Keep up the good work, Adrian! Benet Allen 22:27, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your kind words, they are very much appreciated. I was annoyed by his criticisms because it is easy to see from his remarks (above) that he does not understand what is encyclopaedic and what is not. Your comments were very welcome so thanks again, Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 13:16, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

St Mary Redcliffe

Sorry about the captions to the photos - this was an accident on my part. In adding the organ console photo (from Wiki commons) I inadvertently wiped your photos and couldn't find the original, so I had to add them from a previous edit - which didn't include the captions for some reason or another. Tony Whatmough, one time Vicar of SMR, is a member of my orgofftop group and SMR came into today's discussion on English Architecture - he mentioned the occasion Her Majesty the Queen had visited the Church during his incumbency. I have played the organ there. Quite magnificent. harfo32

Brooks Kubik

An article that you have been involved in editing, Brooks Kubik, has been proposed for deletion. Please look there to see why this is, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Dsreyn 01:20, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hillman Avenger

I see you removed the phrase "fell apart" and changed to "not a success" on the Uruguay built pickup truck. I am reliably assured that "fell apart" is exactly what these vehicles did, the conversion did not properly take account of the fact that the vehicle originally had a prestressed roof to add rigidity. The pickup trucks quite literally snapped and collapsed (which is a shame really because I thought they looked cute!). Do you think we could change the wording to more accurately reflect the problem with the vehicles? Regards. Colin99 23:47, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I only changed it because, in an encyclopedia, we can't always use the sort of of language we would use in talking to each other directly (like "it fell apart"). However, in this case, if that's what they did (fall apart!) then I'm quite happy to reinstate what it said before. Thanks for writing - Adrian Pingstone 07:52, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Point taken. Perhaps "broke apart" might be more appropriate. Colin99 10:32, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for the image info. It was greatly appreciated. I owe you a Guiness.--docsophist 15:36, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Because one of your photos appears on the Bank of England Museum page, I thought you would want to know that the museum, which was closed for renovations for several months, has reopened. I have updated the article accordingly. Regards, TruthbringerToronto 01:24, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cracked windscreen

Just out of sheer curiosity, after you removed it from the SAA article — is a cracked windscreen that common to not be an 'incident'? I'd have imagined otherwise, or are the fail-safes good enough? Thanks, dewet| 15:46, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I removed it simply because a cracked windscreen is not important enought to feature in an encyclopedia. I'm not saying it's unimportant to the airline or the passengers, I'm only saying we need not feature such incidents in WP. I would guess every airline has had such things happen so we'd have a cracked windsereen or a burst tyre entry for every airline. We keep the Incidents heading for much more serious stuff. Thanks for asking - Adrian Pingstone 15:52, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with the removal; as I said this was for my own curiousity. You seem knowledgeable about the airline industry, which is why I posed my question to you. I was just wondering whether it is actually just trivial, or indeed a common serious occurence? The same for burst tyres. dewet| 15:55, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I worked on Airbus A320, A330 and A340 wing design at BAe as an aerodynamicist but I'm in no way connected with airline matters, just interested. So, sorry, I can't help you. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 14:26, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Diyarbakir

A recent user edit on the Diyarbakir page removed most of the pictures that had been there and replaced them with new ones. I don't think some of the new ones are of the same quality as the old ones (some are low quality scans) but don't want to "be bold" as I uploaded most of the earlier ones and may be biased. Your Solomon's judgement would be appreciated. Old piccies are viewable at [3] Gerry Lynch 21:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

Hi, hoping you can offer some advice. I puchased (from an aviation collector's estate) an original black and white photo of a Miles Whitney Straight, which I thought would be good to illustrate both that article, and the history of Aerial Topdressing. The problem is potential copyright. On the back is the stamp of Whites Aviation, (but no assertion of copyright). Whites aviation is a firm which came into existence after the (apparently pre war) photo appears to have been taken. Leo White was airplane buff and used to collect photos himself, and the estate included several hundred of his photos. I contacted the successor firm, sending a copy of the photo, and asking them if they owned copyright. Twice. 6 months ago. I have heard nothing back.

Would I be safe to put the image on Wikipedia?Winstonwolfe 00:25, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to answer anyhow, enoyoy the break :-)Winstonwolfe 04:25, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Birthday, Arpingstone! -- preschooler@heart 23:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for editing my entry. A quick note, though. I assume you removed "massive amount" because it sounded POV. Do you have an idea for alternative wording that indicates the amount of messages without removing it entirely? Also, I think your rewrite has a stray comma introducing a clause that isn't actually a clause. I'll go chance that last bit. Please answer on my talk page. - Mgm|(talk) 15:52, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Afriqiyah Airways

I recently uploaded this image from the German Wikipedia. On the German wikipedia, the license had the letter 'c' in grey with a strike through. I didn't know what that corresponded to in the english one. Could you please check it out in the German Wikipedia and apply a suitable license tag.

Thanks for the fix
