Things changed during 2005. Almost 300 men from all the Venezuelan states went to Caracas for the castings. 56 were chosen, to then suffer a very unfair round of eliminations: Sometimes by phone, sometimes when they get to the oratory classes, the guys were told: "you're eliminated, try next year". The popularity of the pageant falled down very quickly. Only 20 contestants had the ninth edition; experts say only 7 or 8 should have been there, not to say that many quality contenders were eliminated weeks before. The winner was Jose Ignacio Rodríguez, Mr. Zulia, a medician from Maracaibo. Rodríguez was the shortest winner ever, at 178 cm height (5'9''). The first runner-up was José Luis Porras, Mr. Portuguesa, and 2nd.runner-up José Luis Díaz, Mr. Guárico. Expert said that Porras or Díaz should have won. That made evident months later, when Rodriguez wasn't officialy invited to any event the Miss Venezuela Organization made.

Due to the very low popularity of Mr. Venezuela in 2006, and due to the proximity of Mr. World 2007, the organization picked 6 former contestants to make very quicly the tenth edition of the pageant. The chosen guys were Marco Ravelo (Mr. Trujillo 2004) Marco Vilera (Mr. Yaracuy 2004) José Luis Porras (Mr. Portuguesa and 1st.runner-up 2005) Alberto Bahamonde (Number 1, 1996) Luis Enrique Machado (Mr. Monagas, 2005) and the winner, Vito Gasparrini, who had represented Mérida state in 2003, and was considered the favorite that year. ONce again, the controversy: Experts said Gasparrini was the one to win since the very beginning and they made the pageant as a smoke curtain, the same way they did with Federika Guzmán months before.

Everybody was expecting this could be the time for the Mr. Venezuela pageant to recover and live again some past glories. Some say the pageant is over, some in the opposite side says that the 2007 Mr. Venezuela eleventh annual show will be held after Miss Venezuela, maybe betwwn October and November.

Mister Venezuela is an annual male pageant and the most important male competition of Venezuela. The winner and finalists represent Venezuela in many international pageants.

Mister Venezuela pageant was born under the guardianship of Osmel Sousa and María Kallay who itself advocate to carry out a male contest with the same discipline, quality and success of its female counterpart. But the beauty experts say that Sousa and Joaquín Riviera (Miss Venezuela TV show producer) are the real "owners" of the pageant.

Before Mr. Venezuela, some other TV male shows were held, being "Galán de Venezuela" (Venezuela's hunk) the most remembered. It was held between 1984 and 1986, on the show "Sabado Sensacional" with Amador Bendayán. Later, on 1987, a Mr. Venezuela pageant was held only once, by the TV host Guillermo González on his program "El show de Fantástico". The winner was the guy from the Federal District. Some of the men who competed were bodybuilders, some had moustache (like the 1st.runner-up, from Nueva Esparta) and some were hairy or out of shape. The pageant was a total failure.

1996 was the chosen year to initiate the Mister Venezuela. With a great expectation and certain reserve was received the first edition of the contest, on July 17, 1996. The winner was number 20, José Gregorio Faría. During the first three years of the pageant, the contestants used numbers to be identified. That year was the only in which the boys used tight boxers instead of thongs for the swimsuit round.

For the second edition, on April 8, 1997, 20 contestants took part of the final. They were men with different professions: models, sportmen, and even two police officers. The winner was number 11, Sandro Finoglio, who later was 1st.runner -up in Manhunt 1997 and Mr. World 1998. The 1st.runner-up was a model named Guillermo Pérez, who later became a Tv soap opera hunk. Since the international triumph of Finoglio, the male pageant fad went crazy all over the country. At least 20 different male contests were held annually from there on.

The third contest was held on October 30, 1998. 24 men took part of it, and the winner was the host-to be number 15, Ernesto Calzadilla, and models Numa Delgado and Nadir Nery were second and third place respectively. In that occasion, the guys were dressed like the power rangers for the presentation part, and danced like strippers during the musical act. Later, Nery won the first Mr. International title for Venezuela, and in 1999 Calzadilla won the Manhunt.

1999 meant the consolidation of the pageant. More than 400 men presented at the castings from all over the country, but only 26 were finally chosen. The final was on November 4, 1999. That year is also remembered as the first year in which there was a Top 10 (before, only 5 finalists were chosen) and also it was the pageant with more blonde contestants. However, none of the Top 3 guys was blonde: the winner was number 20, Alejandro Otero, another actor-to-be and top model. The 1st.runner-up was his colleague Ezzio Cavallaro, and 2nd.runner-up was José Madonía, "the mechanic", who has the best body ever in Mr. Venezuela history, experts say.

In the fifth edition, in November 22, 2000, 26 men represented every state and region in Venezuela, but wearing scarfs instead of sashes. The victory was for Luis Nery, a model from Cabimas who represented the Peninsula Goajira. 1st.runner-up was Mr. Miranda, Cristóbal Lander and 2nd.runner-up was one of the favorites, Anibal Martignani who represented Guárico.

2001 arrived to held the sixth annual finals. Once more, 26 competitors struggled to win the title. During the preliminars, Mr. Barinas, Juan Marcos Osorio, left the rehearsals and never came back, so only 25 competed on November 6. The title was awarded to Mr. Vargas, Daniel Navarrete. Second place for Mr. Carabobo, Enrique Cuevas, and Mr. Delta Amacuro, César Suárez (The first black guy ever in top 3) got 3rd.place. Cuevas won late the Mr. Intercontinental title. Venezuela had won already all 4 major male events.

Due to the political situation in Venezuela during 2002, the seventh annual pageant was postponed to be held in 2003. Finally, the Mr. Venezuela election was the most popular topic: a very important amount of people followed the finals and the 4-part eliminatory rounds. The finalists were chosen by the public, who sent text messages in their cellphones. They were 28, but only 16 survived. That year is remembered to have the best group of contestants so far: all top 10 were top models at the time, and many of them still works on the runway, acting, or doing TV spots. The winner, unexpectedly, was Andrés Mistage, from Carabobo. 1st.runner-up was Mr. Delta Amacuro, Jacinto Oropeza, one of the sexiest candidates ever. Claudio de la Torre, Mr. Anzoátegui, closed the Top 3.

In 2004, for the eight edition, once again the public chose their favorites among the 28 contestants, but this time, 22 guys qualified to finals, due to a new "repechage" round in which the 12 eliminated could struggle for one of the 6 places remaining. The winner was Mr. Amazonas, Francisco León, one of the skinniest guys ever in history, but with a very nice way of talking to the crowd. Second place was Mr. Anzoátegui, Miguel Blanco, a top model at the time, and his colleague Jean Claudio Palmegiani from Carabobo, finished third. That year, the 28 men who participated had to stand a lot of criticism, due to the fact that half of the guys were strippers or bartenders. Another controversy was the best body award, which went to Mr. Península Goajira, Alejandro Ramírez, the most bodybuilder type of 2004.
