Manhunt International ( German  "Männerfang International" ) is an international beauty contest for men. The event has been held since 1993 by the Singapore organization Metromedia Singapore in cooperation with the Australian event organizer Procon Leisure International at changing locations in Asia and Australia. The competition is officially considered the first international beauty pageant for men.

history

Manhunt International emerged from a 1987 local male beauty pageant in Singapore. Alex Liu, organizer of beauty competitions for Metromedia Singapore, launched this. With the competitions, men's products should be better marketed. On November 30, 1993, Liu and his Australian business partner Rosko Dickinson hosted the first international men's beauty pageant on the Australian Gold Coast . The majority of the female jury consisted of international fashion journalists. It was won by the 26-year-old Berlin student Thomas Sasse, who was able to prevail against 24 competitors and received a prize of 10,000 Australian dollars .

In 1995 the final was broadcast on television for the first time in 39 countries and watched by around 420 million viewers. In 2005 the event in South Korea was sponsored by Mercedes-Benz , among others . A year later, Manhunt International reached one billion viewers worldwide when it was held in China. Held exclusively in Asia and Australia so far, the event is little known outside of these two continents. Although there are no immediate plans to host the beauty competition in the United States , the organizers are hoping for greater awareness in the western world.

As in the Miss World election , the candidates are determined in national competitions (e.g. Mister Germany ) and must be between 18 and 30 years old. They compete against each other in a preliminary, semi-final and final round, among other things in fashion shows (swimwear, national costumes, etc.) and talent competitions. The winner will be determined by a jury, which has also included male jurors since 2001. In addition to a cash bonus and a model contract, the Manhunt winner receives a white scarf. As in the Miss World election, special prizes ("Mr Friendship", "Mr Personality", "Mr Photogenic", "Best National Costume" etc.) are awarded sporadically.

At the award ceremony in South Korea in 2008, eleven jurors named the Moroccan Abdelmoumen El Maghraouy for the first time an Arab participant as the winner. El Maghraouy received a cash award of US $ 10,000 and a $ 30,000 model contract with the Chinese agency Mythmodels Beijing .

Award winners

In the 14 competitions held so far, participants from India have performed most successfully, winning the title once and finishing second twice. The most frequent victories were won by candidates from Europe (five victories).

In 1996 the final was supposed to take place at the turn of the year, but it was postponed to 1997 due to the upcoming Singapore parliamentary elections. In 2003 and 2004, the beauty contest was canceled due to the outbreak of the infectious disease SARS and the avian flu H5N1 in Southeast Asia. In 2009, the event, which will again take place in South Korea, was canceled due to the global influenza pandemic and moved to Taiwan in 2010 .
