There are as many as 6 different species of Gurnard found in waters surrounding the British Isles. These species include the Red, Tub, Grey and Streaked

Gurnards have prominant pectoral fins at the front. Having three spines which are detached and act as feelers that are most likely used to search the ground for food or prey.

The Gurnard makes a distinct grunting sound which is often louder during spawning.
