Luna Park, Melbourne
Luna Park is an amusement park located on the foreshore of Port Phillip Bay in St Kilda, Victoria, which is a suburn of [Melbourne]], Australia. It opened in 1912 and has been operating since. It is one of two Luna Parks in Australia, the other being the younger Australian icon on Sydney Harbour.
The iconic "smiley mouth" gateway (1912) and scenic railway (the oldest continually-operating rollercoaster in the world) and the restored carousel (1913) are all heritage registered. The ghost train retains its 1936 tracks.
The park remains popular with young children and their parents who have fond memories of the park from their youth.
The park's beachfront site (along with the neighbouring Palais Theatre & Palace nightclub) has also become attractive to developers, leading Melbourne transport magnate Lindsay Fox bought Luna Park in early 2005, pledging to restore it to the glory he remembers from his 1930s youth, spent in nearby Windsor.
Sadly, six months after his multi-million dollar purchase, he seems to have done nothing except enjoy a photo opportunity on the fabled Scenic Railway rollercoaster, the oldest continually operating wooden-framed roller coaster in the world. One of only nine of its kind still operating, the Scenic Railway was installed in the Park on its opening in 1912
