Mehmet Eymür is a former Turkish intelligence official. He led the counter espionage unit of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), during a career spanning three decades.[1] He was the right-hand man for MIT deputy undersecretary Hiram Abas,[2][3] who was assassinated in Kadikoy, Istanbul after leaving the service.

His popular Web site hosts many intelligence-related documents,[1] like the controversial 1987 MIT Report, which was referred to by reporters in the Ergenekon investigation.[4] The MIT has denied the authenticity of the intelligence in the Ergenekon evidence (with the 1987 report being singled out),[5][6][7] some of which allegedly emanated from the Workers' Party.[8] The 1987 Report, which Eymür wrote, led to his being fired on June 10, 1987.[9] Eymür subsequently entered the ice producing business with Lt. Col. Korkut Eken, however this partnership ended on acrimonious terms.[9]

Eymür regained his old post under Tansu Ciller, who became prime minister in 1995,[9] however when Mesut Yilmaz replaced Ciller, Eymür was discharged again and assigned to Washington, where he faced criminal charges in Turkey.[1] In a testimony to the Susurluk commission, former Deputy Chairman Hanefi Avci, from the Intelligence Department associated with the Security Department, said that Eymür controlled an illegal gang that was created to combat the PKK. Eymür returned to Turkey in 1998 to help prepare a report against Şenkal Atasagun, the undersecretary of the MIT, who had recommended Eymür's dismissal to prime minister Yilmaz in 1997.[9]

Personal life

His spouse is called Janset.[9]
