GA/FA Assessments

I think yesterday, I gave a cursory instruction to familiarize yourself with WP:FAR, WP:FARC, and WP:GA/R. I should elaborate.

Generally, we are free to assign any rating other than WP:GA or WP:FA, which are procedural ratings. Thus, if an article has achieved FA status, we automatically assign it to FA. Then we determine if edits which have changed the article since the promotion or standards which have changed since the promotion make us consider an article unworthy of such continued recognition. We should slap an FA on it and move on and unless it is not that case that almost all of the paragraphs have at least one citation (using inline citations like I encourage at WP:CHICOTW. It use to be the case that an article with an External links section and no inline citations could achieve FA. Now, it can't even get GA without almost all paragraphs having at least one inline citation. Thus, I would say submit an article to FAR if we feel it is currently substandard. Generally, reading prose quality will slow down what we are hoping to do right now so I would just say glance at whether it passes WP:A an WP:RS with inline citations.

If the article fails at FAR and FARC then we can evaluate whether it is a GA after going through such a process. Basically, anything we submit to FAR is substandard for GA at the time of submission, but it may have gotten enough help to make GA during the process. If it looks good enough for GA we can submit it. If it passes, we have options below. If it fails slap a B on it and make sure the {{ArticleHistory}} template is up to date.

For a GA we have several options. On the low end, we can submit an article to GA/R if it substandard. Again, for efficiency just look for citations right now. If it is using the external links and has almost no inline citations submit it to GA/R. Otherwise, we have a choice of slapping a GA on it or giving it an A rating. In general, we are not yet really geared up for evaluating A class articles at WP:WPChi so I would suggest just slapping a GA on it. However, if it is a really good, broad article, with good captioned photos, well cited, covers the full breadth of the article that you are familiar with, etc. you might want to nominate it at WP:FAC for FA status. I have not been paying attention to the articles you have been tagging as closely as I should. Going alphabetically through the GAs, I see that Bertrand Russell is going to have to be submitted to WP:GA/R
I have made 2 GA/Rs you can follow along here going forward. I will not be notifying you directly anymore. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:53, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Diagonals

Well, I honestly think that the template should be changed totally around to simply north-south and east-west. When you create a template with this many boxes on the left, it becomes very confusing except for the few people that you target in Chicago (few meaning in comparison to the total in the world). Most people that I know whom are outside of Chicago, and those inside I do know, do not use the word diagonal for a street direction. Streets that only run northeast to southwest etc, are still referred to as a north-south road, even by mailing address. So, my suggestion is to make the template simple by what their mailing address is, and getting rid of all that other stuff that is on there like "West of blah blah street", northeast southeast of blah blah street, etc. Let me know what you think, I am more than willing to listen.--Kranar drogin 10:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, good luck with the map! I can't help you on that one, but that is an idea.--Kranar drogin 10:59, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have commented again on Template talk:Streets in Chicago with examples on how it possibly should be changed.--Kranar drogin 01:13, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DRV investigations

I have just learned one more thing I can do to help the project. We started producing Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Chicago articles by quality log logs back in April. Whenever these logs are produced at the top there are a few removed articles that have been deleted through WP:AFD, WP:PROD or WP:SD. I recently that Toni Preckwinkle needed to be nominated at WP:DRV. I have not recognized many of the other names that have been removed. You may want to check the logs and see if you recognize any removed articles that were merely poorly sourced.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 16:19, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am starting to realize that there are a few borderline articles per week that we could spend our time on. In most cases it is a person of marginal notability, but for whom the article was not properly sourced. I noticed two that I could recreate, but I have to pick my battles. Alderman Madeline Haithcock got AFDed as did Brad M. Barber. The latter seems to pass WP:PROF very clearly. I have to think about what battles I want to fight given the manpower that we have. If we had a half dozen people buzzing about the project looking for things to do I could farm this kind of thing out. However, since it is basically you and I doing the grunt work with the help of User:Kranar drogin, we have to tread carefully.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 16:57, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Award

Upholder of Wiki
This award is in appreciation of your ongoing work to keep WP:CHICAGO running and for continuing to give the effort that keeps me going on the project.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:18, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Polonia

I see your point and I agree that Polonia is a term without meaning for most English speakers, after all how many people outside of Chicago and New England have come across a Polish community? Yet I am also hesitant to change what is an established term, it is an Encyclopedia and this is the correct term. Is there a possibility for a redirect of some kind perhaps?--Orestek 03:44, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List by length

I requested that about a month ago with no response. How did you find out about it? Have you ever nominated anything at WP:GAC? You should, if you haven't. I just skimmed the first two. Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary looks like it needs some work, but Mircea Eliade seems ready to go.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:30, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oprah Winfrey looks O.K., but may need some work.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:45, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

South side FA

I am thinking about nominating South side (Chicago) for WP:FA. I think we have to work on making sure each paragraph has a citation and then we should be ready to go.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:47, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You probably saw this was up for FA.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 00:35, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2006 Bears, etc

Well, I'm OK with that. It could easily be copied into the main 2006 Bears article. However, when you say "This article could also be the first of similar articles for every season of every major league team in every sport", what does that mean? Does it mean it could be similar to an article (which does not exist, btw) named "2006 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season detailed game summaries"? Or an article like "2006 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season"? Vi Daley

Your political info gathering expertise would be quite helpful this week. Vi Daley should not be any sort of WP:COI. Your assistance last week was greatly appreciated.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 00:36, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, I thought she was related to the Mayor. This week is not going to be so fun and I might even get AfDed if I don't hustle.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:41, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Do you know why User:IvoShandor left WP?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:41, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.P.S. My mother will be in town next week. If you want to do anything under the WP:CHICOTW banner feel free. Just go ahead and nominate it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:41, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
