Fire

On November 1, 2006, a fire broke out in a chemistry lab office. The school was severely damaged and had been declared a total loss. The building was demolished due to safety concerns. Originally, the displaced students were split up between two schools, but now they have returned back to the high school, and are now using a "pod village" until January 2009, the estimated completion date of the new school.

On December 7, 2006, it was reported that the cause of November 1 fire was ruled as arson, and a $10,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for setting the fire. The Guilford County Sheriff's Department has spoken with "people of interest" who they believe may have been involved with the arson.

On October 22, 2007, almost a year after the fire destroyed the school, another fire occured in a bathroom at the pod village. Firefighters were able to contain this fire and students returned to class. It was reported that this fire was also arson. On October 24, 2007, a student was arrested in connection with this fire. Police are still investigating.
