Madurai Tamil is the dialect which is spoken in the city of Madurai, as well as over a vast geographical area of South Tamil Nadu, the area once ruled by the Pandiya Kings. It differs substantially from Tirunelveli and Nagarkoil Tamil (these two regions were also a part of the Pandiya domain).
The general romantic notion about the purity of Madurai Tamil and its closeness to classical Tamil could be ascibed to the to city having sponsored the Tamil Sangam during the days of the Pandiya Kings.
