Thottiyam is essentially an agricultural area; its main crops are [[rice]], [[Plantain (cooking)|plantains]] and [[petals]]. Large quantities of plantains and petals are sent to other States, including exports to Middle East. Thottiyam is the largest producer of bananas in Tamil nadu. The banana growers in this region faced a frequent issue of price drops and wastage. To overcome these problems the farmers of Thottiyam region formed a farmers self-help group known as 'Thottiam Banana Producer Group' to produce value added products from bananas under the brand name of 'Madhur Fruits'. The group produced solar dried banana, banana chocolates, banana cookies and banana powders from fresh bananas. These products were marketed throughout, and outside, India. |

Thottiyam is a Town and Taluk in Tiruchirappalli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Thamilselvi Thirugnanam is the current President of Thottiyam. It is situated 60 km north-west of Tiruchirapalli on Tiruchy-Namakkal State Highway (SH-25) and further it connects Namakkal-Salem-Bangalore National Highway (NH 7). It is located near the Kaveri River, about 12 km north-west of Musiri.[1] Koranganatha Temple located in the outskirts of the town is a historic temple built during the Chola period in the 10th century.[2] There is a village near by this town called Thirunarayana puram which has the famous Vedanarayana perumal temple, Thirunarayanapuram.
