George Lilanga
George Lilanga (1934–2005) was a Tanzanian artist. He was of the tribe of the Makonde, lived in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and was part of the most distinguished representatives of the contemporary African art many years.
His works were represented at all important international expositions of African contemporaries (e.g. Africa Remix in Düsseldorf, Paris, London and Tokyo). On the occasion of his death the Hamburg Mawingu Collection (HMC)[1] has presented in a work directory for the first time a systematically and thematically complete summary of the complex life's work of the artist. In addition, the book arranges various insights into the traditional roots of East African Makonde art as well as into four decades of Lilanga's artistic development with different materials and techniques from sculpture over paintings up to the etching.
The Hamburg Mawingu Collection is one of the internationally leading digests of modern and contemporary East African Makonde art. Besides numerous masterpieces of the well-known Makonde wood sculptors (like Samaki, Dastani, Chanuo, Kashimiri, Karinto, Anangangola etc.) the HMC: George Lilanga Collection is an essential part of the digest.
