George Lilanga (* 1934 ; † June 27, 2005 ) from the Makonde tribe lived in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and was one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary African art for many years .

His works have recently been represented at all major international exhibitions by African contemporaries (e.g. Africa Remix in Düsseldorf, Paris, London and Tokyo). Lilanga has managed to find its own, unmistakable style. On the occasion of his death, the Hamburg Mawingu Collection (HMC) presented for the first time a systematically consistent and thematically structured overview of the artist's complex life's work in a catalog raisonné . The book also provides diverse insights into the traditional roots of East African Makonde art as well as into four decades of Lilanga's artistic development and shows his work with various materials and techniques, from sculpture to painting to etching .

The Hamburg Mawingu Collection is one of the leading international collections of modern East African Makonde carving. In addition to numerous masterpieces by the famous Makonde wood sculptors, the HMC: George Lilanga Collection forms an essential part of the collection.
