? is a listed tavern (kafana) in the Serbian capital Belgrade at 6 Kralja Petra Street.

building

The house in which the kafana "?" Is located was built in 1823 in the Balkan style, with a wooden structure (bondruk). Today it is one of the oldest houses in Belgrade and one of the few surviving examples of architecture of its kind. It is a typical bourgeois house from the beginning of the 19th century. The arrangement of the rooms is largely unchanged to this day, although the ground floor has been rebuilt over time.

Due to favorable circumstances and the insistence of the then owner in the 1940s, who wanted to have it declared national property and set up a museum of Belgrade antiquities, the house was preserved over the centuries. After the end of the war in 1946, the kafana "?" Was actually declared a cultural monument. Since then, conservative work has been carried out several times.

Surname

The building that the tavern ? houses, changed owner and name several times. First the tavern was called "Kod pastira" ("To the Shepherd") from 1878, then in 1892 the name "Kod Saborne crkve" ("To the Cathedral"), but not for long, because this name was not in line with the former Restaurant Ordinance. The church authorities also found that it was an insult to the church as an institution. The owner added a question mark "?" As a temporary solution until the end of the dispute, but also as a protest. This name has remained to this day.
