The Álftafjörður is a narrow fjord in the north of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland .

location

It is a southern branch of the Breiðafjörður and is located in the very east of the peninsula between Stykkishólmur and Búðardalur . The mountains Eyrarfjall (also called Narfeyrarfjall , 382 m) and Úlfarsfell limit it to the east and west.

Surname

The name Álftafjörður means Schwanenfjord in German

Whooper swans often gather on the fjord . The reason for this is that you can find a lot of common seaweed ( Zostera marina ) here, so there is a great deal of food for the swans.

geology

If you drive around the fjord on road 54 and look to the east from the western side of the fjord, you can clearly see a large number of mountain passages in Eyrarfjall, which were once dykes for lava.

In front of the Krákunes peninsula, a 200 m wide strip full of approx. 10 - 30 cm deep boilers with a diameter of 50 to 100 cm and a partially raised rim was discovered, which may be due to the escape of methane gas.

saga

In one of the Icelandic sagas , the Eyrbyggja saga , which deals with the settlers on Snæfellsnes, it is said that once in the Middle Ages, a certain Geirríður ran a small guest house on a charity basis, where all travelers could get accommodation and food for free.
