life and work

Alvaro Peña-Rojas has been making music since 1962 ( rock 'n' roll , later bebop ). He took part in the election campaign of Salvador Allende , and after the military junta came to power, he went to England. With Joe Strummer, founder of the punk group The 101'ers . In contrast to US-dominated jazz, Alvaro distances himself from playing the saxophone. He taught himself to play the piano and flute and founded Squeaky Shoes Records, one of the first independent labels. Since then he has been making his own music, which can hardly be classified stylistically. Alvaro Peña-Rojas, musically and lyrically, roughly, directly and anarchically seizes the vitality that he finds in everyday life. The result is minimalist songs full of poetry and sad sarcasm, sparkling with life and with subtle humor. Alvaro seems to be reinventing music making with each song, but with genuine musicality.

Alvaro Peña-Rojas has lived in Constance since 1979 , giving concerts with different players. Furthermore, new compositions and recordings are created. Since the end of the military junta in Chile, he has become increasingly popular in his homeland, especially among younger audiences and musicians.
