Doctors Against Animal Experiments eV is a club based in Cologne , which under the motto "Medical progress is important - Animal testing is the wrong way!" From ethical , medical and scientific reasons for the abolition of animal testing begins.

founding

The organization was founded in 1979 by the neurologist couple Margot and Herbert Stiller and other doctors in Hamburg.

Members

According to its own statements, the association has around 2,800 members / sustaining members, of which almost a third are members ( doctors , veterinarians , dentists , psychologists and natural scientists working in the medical field ) and around two thirds are sustaining members. The association works independently of the interests of the pharmaceutical industry and universities and is financed exclusively from donations and membership fees.

aims

The organization considers respect and reverence for life to be the highest commandment for human and especially medical and scientific action and accordingly advocates medicine without animal experiments. In their opinion, animal experiments are superfluous because the “results of animal experiments cannot be transferred to humans with the necessary certainty”. Furthermore it was "through extensive trials of sick and healthy people [be clearly shown] that today's lifestyle diseases mainly by factors such as smoking , alcohol abuse , improper diet , stress , lack of exercise, etc. are caused."

The association aims on the one hand to prevent and research into the causes of diseases and, on the other hand, to use research methods that are not tested on animals , e.g. B. with cell cultures , multi-organ chips, computer simulations, etc.

Methods

  • public relation
    • Information and education of the public through publications, statements, media work, etc.
    • Campaigns and Actions
  • Internet database datenbank-tierversuche.de
    • Provision of summaries of experiments carried out in Germany in order to give the public an insight into research in animal experiments
  • Eastern Europe projects
    • Equipping universities in Eastern Europe with cruelty-free teaching materials
  • Youth projects
    • Teaching materials
    • Website Harry helps animals

criticism

The association is accused of a lack of proximity to actors in medical research and insufficient expertise. Among other things, the association is criticized for replacing animal experiments with cell cultures and computer models, since these complex biological processes can only insufficiently reproduce and are therefore insufficient for researching longer chains of effects.
