Æbbe also Æbbe the younger , Latin and German Ebba , (* unknown; † April 2, 870 in Coldingham Priory , Scotland ) was abbess of Coldingham Priory and is an Anglo-Saxon saint.

Nothing is known about the origin of Æbbe. In 870 she was abbess of Coldingham Monastery, which had been founded by Æbbe von Coldingham also Æbbe the Elder , daughter of King Æthelfrith about 200 years earlier .

Since 867 the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok raided the coasts, settlements and monasteries of southern Scotland on a regular basis. When they reached Coldingham in 870, Æbbe gathered the nuns of her convent in the chapter house. In order to avoid the threatened rape , which would also have robbed the women of their virginity , she warned her nuns and urged them to follow their example and cut off their nose and upper lip . The nuns followed her, and when the Danes invaded the monastery, they were so repulsed by the sight of the women that they refrained from raping them. They locked the women up and set the monastery on fire. All the nuns died in the fire.

Modern reception

Judy Chicago dedicated an inscription on the triangular floor tiles of the Heritage Floor to Æbbe for her installation The Dinner Party . The porcelain tiles labeled with the name Ebba are assigned to the place with the place setting for Hrotsvit .
