Coldingham Priory

The Coldingham Priory is a former priory of the Benedictine order . Its ruins are in the Scottish village of Coldingham in the Scottish Borders Council Area . A church building of the same name is still in use today. It belongs to the Presbyterian Church of Scotland . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The entire complex is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

In 1097 King Edgar donated the lands of Coldingham to the Benedictine monks of Durham Abbey . The following year they built a church there, which was consecrated in 1100 and consecrated to St. Mary . However, at that time it was only a church. It is not known when the complex was converted into a priory. Johann Ohneland largely destroyed the church in 1216. As a result, a much larger church with a cross-shaped floor plan was built. Wall fragments from this building are integrated into the current church.

In 1504 the Scottish Crown claimed the priory. They separated it five years later from Durham Abbey and placed it under Dunfermline Abbey . Like the abbeys of Kelso , Dryburgh and Melrose , Coldingham Priory was devastated in 1545 during the Rough Wooing by Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford . The rebuilt church was again badly damaged in 1648 by Cromwell's forces. At this point the priory had already been dissolved.

Today's Coldingham Priory was developed from the south wing of the former church. The bell tower, added in 1662, collapsed around 1770. In 1745 a fire devastated the church. After the poor overall condition of the building was pointed out in 1851, renovation measures were carried out five years later. Due to the long construction history, the building has both Romanesque and Gothic fragments.
