Edgar (Scotland)

Edgar ( Etgair mac Maíl Coluim ; * 1074 ; † January 8, 1107 in Edinburgh ) was King of Scotland from 1097 until his death. He was the third son of Malcolm III. and his second wife, Margaret of Scotland , canonized by Pope Innocent IV in 1251 . He was also called Edgar the Peaceful .

He ascended the throne as the successor to his uncle Donald III. and his older brother Edmund , who ruled together and were driven from the throne by an Anglo-Norman force. Edgar's half-brother Duncan II had already seized power in May 1094, but died only six months later on the battlefield.

In contrast to Donald and Edmund, Edgar politically again sought proximity to the Norman-ruled Kingdom of England . After all, his father, Malcolm III, was also. a friend of England and his mother Margareta was English herself. He promoted the settlement of Norman feudal men in the south of Scotland and thus strengthened the influence of England. He also renounced the Hebrides and the Kintyre Peninsula in favor of Norway . Edgar died unmarried and childless and was buried in Dunfermline Abbey.

Under Alexander I , Edgar's younger brother, Scotland was further weakened. The influence of England increased not least because Alexander was the brother-in-law of the English king.
