Urban conurbations by population

Since January 1st, 2020 Norway has been divided into 11 provinces ( Fylke ), which are divided into a total of 356 municipalities. These in turn usually consist of several towns and cities. In total, there were 990 urban settlements (Tettsted) in Norway in 2019.

By far the largest metropolitan region in Norway is Oslo with a population of 1,121,020 (as of January 1, 2005). This means that 25 percent of the country's population is concentrated in the capital region.

The following table contains the cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants, the results of the population censuses (VZ) of November 1, 1980, November 3, 1990 and November 3, 2001, an estimate by the Central Statistical Office in Norway for January 1, 2007 and the Result of the census of January 1, 2011.

The higher-level administrative units in Norway are the provinces (Fylke). These were grouped by the government into five statistical regions ( landsdel , German part of the country). The table shows the region to which the city belongs. The population figures refer to the respective urban settlement - the geographical urban area - not to the city or municipality in the political sense.

(VZ = population census, S = estimate)
