Fosnavåg is the administrative center ofHerøymunicipality, which includes the islands ofHerøya,Leinøya,Remøya,RundeandNerlandsøyaas well as part ofGurskøya inaddition to Bergsøya.

In 2014 the city had 3522 inhabitants.

Fosnavåg has a natural harbor and is one of the largest fishing spots in the Sunnmøre region . Fosnavåg has had city status since 2002. This allows ships to be registered with Fosnavåg (also Fosnavaag) as their home port. In addition to numerous fishing and supply ships for the oil industry, the coast guard ships Harstad , Farm and Njord are registered in Fosnavåg.

The local newspaper " Vestlandsnytt " and the web newspaper "Herøynytt" , like the Havila Group and its subsidiary Havila Shipping, are based in Fosnavåg.

Personalities

The neuroscientist May-Britt Moser was born in Fosnavåg in 1963 and received the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 2014 alongside her husband Edvard Moser and John O'Keefe .
