The Viking musical Kongens Ring is performed every year on the Herøy amfi open-air theater |
Herøya is an island on the western Norwegian coast in the middle of the Herøyfjord ( Fylke Møre og Romsdal ).
The parish, the Thing and the municipality of Herøy are named after the island of Herøya . On the site of today's Herøy Kystmuseum there was originally a stone church built in Romanesque style, which was demolished in 1859 and replaced by a wooden church . This was again demolished in 1916 and replaced by a new church in Fosnavåg, Herøy kyrkje . However, the foundations of the old church are still in place today.
Herøya was already a well-known port and trading post in the Viking Age. The story tells of a dramatic meeting between King Olav Haraldsson and the Viking Møre-Karl in 1027. The open-air play " Kongens Ring " (The King's Ring) , performed annually in July, revolves around this encounter.
Like all islands in Herøy municipality, the island is connected to the mainland by bridge and can be easily reached without a ferry.
