history
The first Christian church in Herøy parish was built in 1184 on the island of Herøya , after which the parish is named, a stone church. This “Mariakyrkje”, built in Romanesque style, was the main church in the Sunnmøre region . It was demolished in 1859 and replaced by a larger wooden church at roughly the same location. After the village of Fosnavåg had developed into the center of the municipality, this wooden church was also demolished in 1916 and a new church was built in Fosnavåg, which burned down on July 2nd, 1998. Numerous works of art from the Middle Ages were destroyed.
Today's church
In 2003 the newly built Herøy kyrkje was consecrated. It has 700 seats and a total area of 2300 m² spread over two floors. The parish of Herøy is also located in the church.
Church furnishings
The artistic church furnishings come from Per Odd Aarrestad. The baptismal font was modeled on the baptismal font from 1572 that was destroyed in the fire. The organ, equipped with 1850 pipes, was built by the German company Jehmlich Orgelbau in Dresden and consecrated on November 30, 2003.
